Mary Alzura Campbell was born at Hillsborough, Ohio, Sept. 14, 1868 and died at her home near Creighton, Nebr. on August 28, 1930 at the age of 61 years, 11 months and 14 days. In her early childhood, she moved with her parents to Marion County, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. On the 13th day of February, 1886, she was united in marriage to H.C. Elwood. To this union seven children were born, four sons and three daughters, all of whom are living: Mrs. Edna Eckerman of Grand Island, Mrs. Elva Van Deveer of Creighton, Mrs. Alta Fricke of Winnetoon, Ira E. of Gordon, Lyman L. of Creighton, Clay Sumner and Linn H. of Gordon. In the year of 1892 she united with the Christian Church and lived a conscientious Christian life until God called her home. Besides her immediate family, she leaves to mourn her departure, one sister, Mrs. Newton Hale of Swan, Iowa, thirteen grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Elwood was a good wife, a kind and loving mother and a friend to everyone. Her place in the community can never be filled. She was patient and enduring to the end. Because of the seriousness of her condition, she was unable to see her friends for a number of weeks past and was attended by her own family only. During this most trying time the love and devotion of her family never wavered. It may truly be said of her that a noble life is ended. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon from the Federated church at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. Sawtelle, assisted by Rev. Ramseyer, the pastor. The church was overflowing with friends, who had come to pay their final respects to this esteemed woman. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, which attested the esteem and love she was held in by her every acquaintance. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery.
