Elwood, 93, of Creighton is Dead Creighton, Neb. -- Special to The News: Henry Clay Elwood, 93, prominent resident of the Creighton community since the early '80s and the organizer of the Farmers' Union in Nebraska and South Dakota, died about 1 o'clock Friday afternoon in the Plainview hospital, where he had been a patient since Sept. 24. He had been in good health for a man of his years until that time. Funeral services were to be held at the Creighton Congregational church with the Rev. John Becker officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery here. The body was at the Hengstler mortuary in Creighton. Mr. Elwood was born Sept. 13, 1857 at Prairie City, Iowa and died Dec. 22 at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 10 days. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood came to the Creighton community from Marion county, Iowa, in the early '80s and located on a homestead five and one half miles southwest of Creighton. Seven children were born to the couple. After Mrs. Elwood's death in 1930, he lived alone for many years. Mr. Elwood was a prominent member of the Farmers' Alliance. He served in the state legislature in 1890-1900.[According to the Nebraska Blue Book, Henry C. Elwood of Creighton served one term in the Nebraska House of Representatives, 1899-1901.] An organizer of the Farmers' Union in two states, Nebraska and South Dakota, Mr. Elwood held many offices in the organization, including that of Seventh District president and member of the state legislative committee. Mr. Elwood was also a member of the Nebraska constitutional convention of 1919-20. Until recent years, Mr. Elwood was widely known as a public speaker. Mr. Elwood is survived by three daughters, Mrs. D.A. Van Deveer and Mrs. H.A. Fricke of Creighton, and Mrs. O.S. Eckerman of Grand Island; four sons, Lyman, who farms near Creighton, Ira E. of Batesland, S.D., and C.S. and Linn, both of Gordon, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
