Church Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Stegge, 98, who died Thursday afternoon at the Morgan Nursing home at Fonda, were held Monday morning, March 27, in Sacred Heart church. Rev. S. A. Grady officiated and burial was in Calvary cemetery. Casket bearers were Lawrence Stegge, Cletus Stegge, Robert Hiatt, Joe Vainreh, Henry Lampe and James Ryan. Born Oct. 9, 1868 at Spillville, the former Mary Posakony, she came to the Pocahontas community in 1881 and married Bernard H. Stegge in 1888 at Fonda. They farmed, operated the first restaurant and recreation hall in Pocahontas, and later operated a hardware store at Varina before returning to farming. Later they engaged in business in Pomeroy for a short while and then came back to Pocahontas 34 years ago. Mr. Stegge died in 1957 Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. George Erie and Mrs. Margaret Hiatt, both of Pocahontas, and Mrs. Emma Payer, Sioux City; one son, Joe, Lohrville; also a number of grandchildren. Those who came from a distance to attend the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Kibbee of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Forsmark and daughter of Durant, Mrs. Emma Payer, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Payer and family and Mr. and Mrs. George Hardy and daughter of Sioux City, Margaret Christian of East St. Louis, and Mrs. Angie Wagner and daughter of Mason City.
