Description	:	Mary Baxter was born near Massena Springs, St. Lawrence Co., NY, July 18, 1828. A number of her early girlhood years were spent with her maternal grandparents in Ontario, Canada. After the death of her grandmother, the home was broken up and she returned to her parents, who had then removed to Canton, in the same county. November 30, 1848, she was married to William Hinkley, with whom she lived a happy life of nearly fifty-eight years. Read More	Mary Baxter was born near Massena Springs, St. Lawrence Co., NY, July 18, 1828. A number of her early girlhood years were spent with her maternal grandparents in Ontario, Canada. After the death of her grandmother, the home was broken up and she returned to her parents, who had then removed to Canton, in the same county. November 30, 1848, she was married to William Hinkley, with whom she lived a happy life of nearly fifty-eight years. In 1854, they moved to Cherry Valley, Illinois, and ten years later came to Frederika, which has since been their home. Her husband died May 28th, 1906, leaving her to finish the weary life journey alone. And yet not alone for a loving hand helped and guided. She was the mother of six children, four of whom are in the Better Land. Converted in the early life, Mrs. Hinkley was for more than sixty years a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. With the passing of the Sabbath day, Jan. 14, 1912, there passed from our midst to her eternal home, one who has been bringing to the hearts and homes of our community for over forty years the teachings of a Christian life. She was laid to rest in Alcock Cemetery Jan. 18, 1912, funeral services being conducted by L. O. Thompson, pastor of the Frederika M. E. church. Mrs. HINKLEY knew by experience something of the sorrows and grief of life, and this tended to develop the strong, sympathetic side of her nature. God granted her many years, and she made the best use of them. For forty-seven years she was a member of the Frederika Methodist church. She loved her church with peculiar devotion and her loyalty was of the staunchest kind. She met the problems of life as they came with calm, steadfast eyes and entered the shadow of death quiet, and feared not. Death to her was as the setting sun, a mere entrance to eternal day. She had listened to the teachings of Him who said, "Set thine house in order." When the call came she was ready. "What if some morning, when the stars were paling, and the dawn whitened, and the east was clear, Strange peace and rest fell on me from the presence of a benignant angel standing near." "And I should tell him as he stood beside me, This is our earth, most friendly earth and fair; Daily its sea and shore, through sun and shadow, Faithful it turns, robed in its azure air." "There is blest living here, loving and serving, and guest of truth and serene friendship dear; But stay not, spirit; Earth has one destroyer, His name is Death; flee, lest he find thee here." "And what if then, while still the morning brightened, and freshened in the elm the summer's breath, Should gravely smile on me the gentle angel, And take my hand and say, "My name is Death."
