[Burlington Republican (Burlington, Kansas) - Friday, December 21, 1894] Lottie, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hoffmans, whose serious illness at the school in Quincy, Ill., was announced two weeks ago, died there last Saturday before Mr. H. could reach her, although a telegram announcing the fatal termination of her illness was received and he left for that city Saturday morning. The remains arrived here Sunday, and the funeral took place Monday morning, the interment being made in the Catholic cemetery west of town. It was indeed a sad homecoming for the fond parents, and the family have the sympathy of all. [Burlington Republican (Burlington, Kansas) - Friday, December 21, 1894] Death of Lottie Hoffmans. Again has the dread invader, Death, entered our midst and removed from us one of the fairest of the city. By some strange providence it seems that those who are just starting on life's journey should be cut down. Why is it? To we mortals it does not seem quite right, yet we are taught to believe that the King of the World in His infinite wisdom doeth all things well, and that we must bow in humble submission to His will. Last Saturday afternoon the community was shocked by the news that Miss Lottie Hoffmans, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hoffmans, had died at St. Mary's institute at Quincy, Ill., where she had been attending school. It was quite generally known that Miss Lottie was ill, but it was reported that she was improving. Then came the telegram announcing her death at 2 p.m. Her mother had been by her side ministering to her wants for several days prior to her death. Mr. Hoffman started for Quincy Saturday morning, and received the sad news while at Kansas City. She died of typhoid fever. The body, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Hoffmans, arrived here Sunday afternoon, and was escorted from the depot to the home by a large number of sympathizing friends. The funeral services were held in the Catholic church, of which sanctuary the deceased was a devoted member, Monday morning at 10 o'clock. The beautiful and impressive ceremony of the church was conducted by Rev. Father Lochrer. The church was crowded with friends who came to pay the last tokens of love and respect to the deceased. The interment was made in the Catholic cemetery west of town. Father Lochrer's remarks at the church were full of comfort for the bereaved family and friends. One thought advanced was that it was far better to die young than to live to an old age, on account of the danger of the many sins and temptations the added years may bring.
