Reiff was born on September 4. 1852, in Butler County, Ohio, to German immigrant John Peter Reiff (1817-1867), who had been born in the Kingdom of Bsvaria (Bayern), and Elizabeth Jane (Newkirk) Reiff (1823-1896), a native of Butler County, Ohio. Of John Peter and Elizabeth Jane (Newkirk) Reiff's ten children, Mary E. Reiff was the sixth to be born. The Memorials of her nine siblings are linked below to hers, to each other, and to their parents. In writing this "bio", Bruce Garver has reported 1852 to be the year of Mary E. (Reiff) Castator's birth based upon the facts that (1) "1852" is incised upon her headstone (See attached photo # 1) at Greenwood Cemetery, and (2) the U.S. Federal Census of 1880 reported Mary E. Reiff to be twenty-eight years of age. Therefore, it seems likely that the birthdate of "Sept. 1, 1842" published in Mary's obituary is off by ten years (See attached photo #2). * * * * * MARY REIFF & DANIEL CASTATOR RAISED TEN CHILDREN: On November 30. 1871. in Butler County, Ohio, Mary E. Reiff wed Daniel Castator (1842–1920), son of Jacob Castator and Catherine (Rinehart) Castator. During the American Civil War, Corporal David Castator had served for three years in Company "I" of the 35th Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. For the rest of his life, Daniel Castator actively participated in every aspect of Hamilton's chapter of t Grand Army of the Republic. Together, Mary E. (Reiff) Castator and Daniel Castator became members of Hamilton's High Street Church of Christ and raised ten children, of whom six have Find a Grave Memorials that are linked below to each other and to those of their parents. Memorials have not yet been found for sons Daniel, James, and William, and for a child whose name is unknown. * * * * * MARY's DEATH AND INTERMENT: Mary E. (Reiff) Castator died at the age of seventy-seven on February 1, 1930, in Hamilton, seat of Butler County, Ohio, and was interred there at Greenwood Cemetery in Section L, Lot 71, Grave 02. Mary's obituary (See attached photo # 2) reported that she was survived by "sons Harry, James, David, Fred, William and Howard" and by daughters Kathrine E. (Castator) Ketchem and Marie Rose (Castator) Chain".
