Daughter of Daniel A. and Stella Fern (Bussard) Patience. She was an only child, a situation she endured by having a close relationship to many Patience cousins while growing up in rural Imogene. Read More	Mary Elizabeth (Patience) Peterson, (91) of rural Shenandoah, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2016, at Elm Heights Care Center. She was born October 16, 1925. Daughter of Daniel A. and Stella Fern (Bussard) Patience. She was an only child, a situation she endured by having a close relationship to many Patience cousins while growing up in rural Imogene. She attended Rice Country School, 3/4 mile from her home. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1943. Her early working career started with Iowa Power and Light Company. She married Donald L. Peterson on January 12, 1946 and proceeded with her new energy-filled career of homemaking and raising four children. She and great friends enthusiastically embraced the joys and challenges of being homemakers in the post World War 2 era. She supported her husband Donald in his pursuits of farming, and ceramic business. Initially they lived on a farm south of Shenandoah; in 1961 they moved north of Shenandoah to a farm two miles from where she was born. She was a devoted daughter and daughter-in-law. And foremost a devoted, supportive Mom. Mary was a life-long member, diligent worker for Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. She enjoyed sewing, baking, reading. She was a member of WW Club, and played in some card clubs. In later years, she also treasured time spent with her family, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as much as she could when transcending distances was possible. Mary and Donald had 64 years of blessed marriage. When it was possible for her to return to the working-outside-the-home world, she returned to work at Iowa Power and Light Company. (MidAmerican Energy). Upon retirement from that career, she was convinced to have another--baking. She found sanctuary at the Sanctuary, making breads and pies. Mary's pleasure was put to good use. Cinnamon rolls and Lemon Coconut pie were among the favorites, gaining her praise thanks to Iowa Boy, Shenandoah's own Chuck Offenberger. She enjoyed the young co-workers, the environment, and became another "grandma" to little Miss Franny, all of which fulfilled a special niche for herself and for the community. She was preceded in death by her parents, nephew William Bateman, and husband Donald. She is survived by four children: Nancy Hertel (Gary) of Madison, WI; David of Shenandoah, Daniel of Shenandoah, and Kristen Sneed (Andrew) of Shirland,IL Five grandchildren: Kerry (Hertel) Boysen, Andy Hertel, Katie (Peterson) Gaspar, Jacob Peterson, and Nathan Peterson. Four great-grandchildren: Clare and Ben Boysen; Caroline and JJ Gaspar. She is also survived by Sister-In-Law Sally (Peterson) Bateman, Brother-In-Law Reynold Peterson, two nephews Jim Bateman, Joe Bateman, and two nieces Kelley (Bateman) Witmer and Karen (Bateman) Reddig. Celebration of life funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. Visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. Burial will be held at the Monroe Township Cemetery in Imogene.
