Leggott, 78, for twenty-two years a resident of Elwood and for 46 years a resident of Gosper county, passed away at her home late last Wednesday evening, following an illness of a few days caused by heart trouble. Through her long residence here Mrs. Leggott was well known throughout this section of the county. She was quiet in everything she did but her generosity to the church and those in need was outstanding. The following obituary, read at the services, gives a brief sketch of her life: Mary Elizabeth Carter, daughter of John and Emma Carter, was born in Geneva, Ills., November 2, 1858 and died at her home in Elwood November 11, 1936, at the age of 78 years and nine days. She was married on December 15, 1881 to George Leggott and to this union eight children were born, seven of whom are still living, Mary having passed away in infancy. With her husband she came to Nebraska in 1889 and settled near Gosper where they lived until 1905 at which time they moved to the farm a mile west of Elwood. Mr. Leggott passed away January 13, 1911. Three years later Mrs. Leggott moved to Elwood where she resided until her death. Mrs. Leggott was converted and united with the church in 1890. In the changes that have taken place in the settling and developing of the country she had been identified with three denominations. At the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Elwood. She was faithful in the work of the church and adorned the gospel of Christ with a Christlike character. She was the communion steward of the local church and always took great care in having all the details of this service well taken care of. She was a kind and loving mother, thoughtful for the welfare of both her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by them and her many relatives and friends. She leaves to mourn her departure her children, Mrs. Alice Hall, Mrs. Anna Fish, Mrs. Carrie Tilson, Roy, Ed and Chas., of Elwood, and Mrs. Esther Frescoln of Winner, South Dakota; also 22 grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, being in charge of Rev. Slagg. A large concourse of former neighbors and friends gathered to pay their last respects to this good lady. Mrs. J. L. Withers, Mrs. Ray Aringdale, Chas. Way and R. L. Bragg sang three quartette numbers and Laree Withers played. Pallbearers were grandchildren of Mrs. Leggott and were Keith and Galen Leggott, George and Russell Tilson, Dale and Paul Fish, Vaugn Leggott and Shirle [sic] Leggott, who took the place of Vern Leggott, a grandson. Interment was made in the Elwood cemetery beside the grave of her husband.
