Description	:	The following written by Elizabeth in Jan, 1969: Mary Elizabeth Dilschneider was born in Cherokee Co. Iowa, near Marcus April 9, 1897. She joined a 4 year old brother, John. Parents names were M.E. and Ida B. Dilschneider. Started to school at age 5 years. Walked 1 1/2 mile to school and the same home. A sister Marguerite joined us on Jan. 6, 1901. Read More	The following written by Elizabeth in Jan, 1969: Mary Elizabeth Dilschneider was born in Cherokee Co. Iowa, near Marcus April 9, 1897. She joined a 4 year old brother, John. Parents names were M.E. and Ida B. Dilschneider. Started to school at age 5 years. Walked 1 1/2 mile to school and the same home. A sister Marguerite joined us on Jan. 6, 1901. On Nov. 14, 1903 another sister, Irene, was born. March 1907 the family moved to Fairview, Mont. where Dad homesteaded. We arrived at Mondak, Mont. where we had to cross the Missouri river on a cable ferry boat. The ice in the river was just breaking up so had to stay there for six weeks until the boat could cross. May 8th we got across and drove all day with our household goods and stock to our homestead which was our home for several years and we children grew up there on the plains of Mont. All open range country at that time with no neighbors for miles. The first summer a big prarie fire went past our house. It had burned for around 30 miles. My mother must have been scared when she sit in the house with we four children. For many miles around all men were out fighting the fire with barrels of water and gunny sacks. They got it out a short ways past our house. I never will forget how dark it got and how the range stock was running ahead and bawling. The first school we attended here was 4 miles distant. We drove a horse and buggy. Believe we went there 2 or 3 years then another school was built 3 miles distant. Was in this little country school where all 4 of us graduated 8th grade. Building not very big but a lot of pupils. The teacher then had to walk 1/2 mile or more, build her own fire and do all the sweeping etc., and teach all 8 grades. I was baptized at age 18 years and joined the Methodist Church in Fairview, Mont. of which we attended nearly every Sunday. In 1916 our neighbors little girl, Hylah Mae Lee, came to live with us. Her mother died when she was born. She lived with another family for about 3 years before she came to us. From then on Mother and Dad raised her to a young womanhood. We all dearly loved her, to this day we still do. After one year of high school I went to work in the Fairview Post Office and remained there 6 years until I was married to Charles Irvin Tompkins on Oct. 24, 1922. Immediately after our marriage we went to Carthage, S.D. which was our home the rest of our life. The family chain of my people was first broken when our dear Mother died on May, 12, 1944 at age 75. They celebrated their Golden Ann. March 1942. All of the children were present. We were grieved again when our Father passed away Nov. 12, 1957 at age 88. Also sister Gene passed away July 31, 1965. Family of Charles and Elizabeth Tompkins were: Hylah Mae Born July 30, 1923 Donald Le Roy Born May 28, 1925 Edward Lewis Born Nov. 22, 1926 Gladys Marie Born Oct. 17, 1931 Robert Dean Born Jan 24, 1936 Roberta Jean Born Jan 24, 1936 On Jan 27, 1936 we lost our baby girl, Roberta. On June 20, 1937 Edward was drowned in the creek West of town. Now four remained to grow up. On May 12, 1961 my dear husband passed away. At this writing, Jan. 1969, the family is scattered. Hylah lives in Idaho, Gladys in Ark., Robert in Calif. and Donald is not married lives at home with me in Carthage. All are well and I have 6 Grandson's, 1 Granddaughter and 1 Great Granddaughter.
