Garhardt C. Jensen Raymond Harry John Jr. ----------- Mrs. John Swanson Mrs. John Swanson, 84, Estherville died Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the Holy Family hospital. Mary Elizabeth Johnston was born May 19, 1868, at Norfolk, N. J., the eldest daughter of six children. Her father was one of the survivors of the charges of the Light Brigade and served as a British soldier for 17 years. When Mary Johnston was a small child, her family moved to Grinnell. She was a personal acquaintance of John Grinnell founder of the town and the young man whom Horace Greeley told to "Go West, Young Man, Go West." Mary Johnston was married to John Swanson at Superior, Feb. 13, 1892, and moved to the Swanson homestead south of Superior where they continued to live until 1945. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1942 and Mr. Swanson died in November, 1946. She is survived by four children, Mabel, Mrs. G. C. Jensen, Raymond and Harry of Estherville, and John, Jr., Spirit Lake. Three children preceded her in death. Fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive. She was a member of the Superior Methodist church and later of the Estherville Methodist church. She was a charter member of the Royal Neighbors and was presented a 50 year pin this past summer. She was also one of the oldest members of the Rebekak lodge. *Obituary is published in the Spirit Lake Beacon, Sept. 25, 1952. -----------
