Spencer OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, June 18, 1929 MRS. JAMES W. KEEN Mary Ellen Ferguson, daughter of Chas. P. and Ellen Ferguson was born in Marshall county, Indiana, and passed peacefully away at her home in Ottercreek township, June 11, 1929, aged 76 years, 11 months and 13 days. She came to Lucas county, Iowa, with her parents in 1865, where she grew to womanhood and was married to James W. Keen. To this union thirteen children were born, five having died in infancy. Her husband and seven children survive to mourn her departure. Those living are are Walter of St. Joseph, Mo., Ernest of Colorado Springs, Colo., Cecil of Cando, North Dakota, Mrs. Viva Kniveton of Fresno, Calif., Mrs. Grace Marker of this county, and Maud at home. The deceased also leaves 17 grandchildren and other relatives and friends by whom she will be greatly missed. Some years ago she gave her heart to Christ and united with the United Brethren church. Her life was best exemplified in her home and to her family she gave unstinted devotion. During her last illness, which was of short duration, she was tenderly cared for and all that human hands could do was done to relieve her. She bore her suffering with remarkable patience and fortitude. Funeral services were conducted at the Norwood U. B. church by the pastor, Rev. Robinson and burial was made at the Fletcher cemetery nearby. It was not possible for all the children to be present to attend the last sad rites. Those in attendance from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Archie Keen from Lamont, and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Keen from North Dakota. The latter had not received the news of his mother's death but was hastening with the hope of once more seeing her alive, which seems doubly hard to bear.
