Below is her Nov 2017 message explaining: "I did some digging and found a thread on ancestry saying that Mary Ellen “Matie” Betterton Preston was John Norman Preston’s first Wife. He married another Mary Ellen and had six more children. "Matie E.’s tombstone says 1870-1902 so she died when she was 32. Mary Ellen’s says 1869-1956. This would make her about 51 in the 1920 federal census-it is possible she is “Ella”. "I just can’t figure out what the second wife’s maiden name is. "Matie E. Is listed in the census records (according to the bio on Mary Ellen Preston’s FaG memorial) as a daughter of Pleasant and Hannah Betterton. Pleasant and Hannah had six children, Flora 1858-1921, Frank 1860, William 1862-1903, Walter 1865-1951, Melinda abt 1868-, and Mary E. 1870. "I think it would be possible to say that Melinda could be Mary Ellen(the second wife) and ‘Ella’ in the census. "The census also says that Norman and Mary Ellen (second wife) married in 1897, five years before Matie E. died. -It’s a lot of speculation but I am sure that Matie E. was John Norman’s first wife. She is buried right next to him on the west side of the IOOF cemetery. Mary Ellen is two plots down on the corner of the family plot.
