Mitchell died of a complication of diseases at her home near Troy Mills, May 12, 1902, aged 64 years, 10 months and 2 days. Mary F. Holman was the daughter of Nathaniel and Martha Luella Holman and was born in Lawrence county, Indiana July 10, 1837. She was the second of a family of thirteen children, of whom four brothers and four sisters survive her. In 1851 she came to Iowa with her parents, who settled in Newton township, Buchanan county. She was married to John Mitchell September 17, 1861. To this union was blessed with nine children, four of whom died in infancy. Clarence and Reuel Mitchell, Avis Holman, Emma Weldon and Martha Hart are still living. Besides her many friends and numerous relatives and her devoted children, she leaves her husband and her aged father, who is ninety-two years of age, to mourn her loss. She was a member of the Christian church, and funeral services were held in the church of that denomitation at Troy Mills, Rev. Lylburn M. Starr, of Center Point, preaching the sermon. She was a devoted wife and mother, always kind and pleasant. She was one of our early settlers and passed through the privations of pioneer life, but lived to see the wolf and deer disappear and the wild prairie made to wave with fields of golden grain.
