Mr. Holman who was one of the early pioneers of Buchanan county, was born July 10, 1810, in Woodford county, Kentucky, where he lived until seventeen years of age. Then he moved to Lawrence county, Indiana, in company with his parents, resided there eighteen years and then went to Monroe county in the same state. From there he came west, locating in Linn county, Iowa, living there but a few months and then he moved to Newton township, Buchanan county, and settled upon a farm. Mr. Holman was married March 26, 1835, to Miss Martha Luella Owens, of Lawrence county, Indiana. This union was blessed with thirteen children: Isaac N., residing in Nebraska; Stephen, residing in the Black Hills, South Dakota; Polly Mitchell, deceased; Zerelda Peyton, living at Sac City, Iowa; Amanda, deceased; Henry, residing near Troy Mills, Iowa; Susanah McCright, living in Knox county, Nebraska; Mahala Buckingham in the asylum, Independence, Iowa; Julia Ward, living in Newton township, Buchanan county, Iowa; Martha J. Wright, living near Holstein, Iowa; Sarah C., deceased; Daniel, died in infancy; Mertie Morarie, an adopted child living near Coggon, Iowa. Mr. Holman and his wife became members of the Christian church in 1835 and remained steadfast in the cause of Christ until their death. His wife died March 15, 1897. He had fifty grandchildren and fifty-eight great-grandchildren. He was aged at the time of his death nighty-four years, four months and eight days. He lived through five generations. Isaac N., Stephen and Henry, his sons, were union soldiers of the war of 1861. He lived to see peace and war succeed each other. I might say, saw kindred rise and fall. Mr. Holman suffered for months from gangrene of the foot before death came to his relief, He bore his suffering with the greatest christian fortitude. The funeral services were held November 20 in the Christian church at Troy Mills. Rev. L. M. Starr preached the funeral sermon. Thomas and Henry, besides his adopted daughter, were the only children able to attend the funeral. He was buried by the side of his wife in Upper Spring Grove cemetery. Besides his devoted children and relatives, he leaves many friends to mourn his departure.
