A most deplorable accident occurred on Monday night, when Mrs. Mary Francis Lawson, wife of Mr. William Lawson, of Asbury district, was crushed beneath the wheels of an excursion train at Pine street station, dying at the General & Marine Hospital a few hours later as a result of her injuries. At the inquest held at the office of Police Justice James F. Tawes, on Tuesday, at which Superintendent Massey, of the N.Y., P. & N.R.R. company, and a number of other officials were present, it was proven to the satisfaction of the jury that the accident was caused by negligence on the part of an employee, or employees of the railroad company, in that the train was not held a sufficient length of time to allow the passengers to alight with safety. It seems that Mrs. Lawson, after spending the day at Ocean City, in Company with two of her young children, was, upon the arrival of the train at Pine street station, compelled to remain in the cars until the majority of the passengers had gotten off. Then, having seen that her children had safely alighted, she attempted to step from the car steps to the platform, when the train was suddenly started. In attempting to recover her position on the steps of the car, she was thrown between the platform and the now moving train, and in such a manner that her feet were thrown across the track, and the wheels of a passenger coach passed over them. A number of returning excursionists, seeing her fall, and hearing her cries, hastened to help her, and but for their timely aid it is believed that the balance of the train would have passed over her body, killing her instantly. As it was, both her feet were horribly mangled and partially severed from her limbs. Medical aid was immediately summoned, and Mrs. Lawson was conveyed to the General & Marine Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate her limbs above the knee, in order to save her life. Drs. Norris, Coulbourne, Simonson, Hall and Collins immediately performed the operation, and it was thought that Mrs. Lawson would rally, and recover, but the loss of blood had been so great, that, combined with the great shock, she died within a few hours. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at Asbury M.E. Church, conduced by Rev. A.T.H. O'Brien, the pastor, and Rev. Louis Randall, pastor of Mount Pleasant Church, of this city. Hundreds of friends and acquaintances attended the services that they might pay their last respects to a kind and loving wife and mother. Mrs. Lawson is survived by her husband, Mr. William Lawson, and four children, one brother, Mr. Milton Wilson, and four sisters, Mrs. Jennie Woodland, Mrs. Edith Sterling, Mrs. Hezekiah Church and Miss Helen Wilson. The following is the finding of the coroner's jury, composed of the following gentlemen: James F. Tawes, coroner, W.F. Byrd, foreman, William E. Daugherty, A.W. Ewell, I.E. Milbourne, T.C. Blades, A.R. Horsey, A.W. Woodland, A.T. Hickman, R.J. Adams, C.C. Sterling, Ira B. Stokes, T. Jefferson Webb. "That she died either from the shock of having her lower limbs crushed by the cars of an excursion train of the N.Y., P. & N.R.R. at Pine street station, in the city of Crisfield, Md., or from the amputation of her lower limbs made necessary as a result of being crushed. And we further find that the accident was due to the negligence of the railroad company in not allowing sufficient time for the passengers to leave the cars and that the party or (parties to us unknown) who were responsible for the starting of the train while passengers were still leaving the cars, should be held criminally liable for the death of the aforesaid Mary Francis Lawson." Superintendent Massey, of the railroad, expressed great regret that such an unfortunate accident had taken place, as the employees in charge of the excursion trains are impressed with the importance of vigilance and care in handling the great number of persons who patronize the company's lines at those times.
