Greek Died Suddenly Last Wednesday at Her Home in This City-Ill Only an Hour-Funeral This Afternoon-Leaves Two Sons, Matthew and George Rumsey, Residing in California Who Were Present at the Funeral-Mrs. S. B. Greek, one of the pioneer residents of Denison, passed away here at her residence on the corner of Locust and Walnut Streets. Wednesday February 9th, at the ripe age of 84 years. The death of Mrs. Greek came suddenly, for she was taken sick wile engaged in conversation with her son and Mrs. James Burk. A physician was summoned but she only lived for about an hour. Mrs. Greek suffered with a slight stroke of paralysis more than a year ago and since that time has been quite feeble,. However, she recovered sufficiently from the attack to go to California, where she enjoyed a several months' sojourn with her son, returning to Denison last spring to the home which she so much enjoyed. Mrs. Greek, whose maiden name was Harvey, was born in New Orleans, in 1837, her father being an Englishman and her mother a Spaniard. She was married in 1857 to W.R. Rumsey and they made their home in the south during the civil war. Mr. Rumsey being a railroad man there. Five children were born to this union; John, George, Matthew, Charles and Clara. The surviving two children are George and Matthew, who live in California, and who were both here for the funeral, as was also her grandson, Jesse. The family came to Denison in 1875 and Mr. Rumsey engaged in the drug business. Mrs. Rumsey died after a lingering disease, a few years after the family moved here, and with much capability the widow assumed the duties of bread winner for her little family. In October 1886, Mrs. Rumsey was married to S.B. Greek, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of the county. Upon his death, April 6, 1898, she was again called upon to assume the management of property affairs and this she did in a way to conserve and up build. She lived to see her sons grow to manhood and established in homes of their own. The only daughter, Clara, was a beautiful and accomplished young woman and her death in 1892 was a source of deep sorrow to her mother. Mrs. Greek was possessed of a bright mind and was thought a great deal of by her neighbors and friends. She was a woman of strong character and determination and up to the very last was able to manage and direct her property interests. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev. M.M. Cable officiating, after which interment was made in Oakland Cemetery in the family plot."
