Mary married Victor Dalmas (a/k/a Dalmasse) on February 24, 1873 and they lived in Louisa County, Iowa near Wapello for the rest of their lives. At least two children are known of: Kathryn Dalmas Ament* and Adolph M Dalmas. Possibly a third/other child, Joseph, was born to them in 1877 or so, but this is unconfirmed at this point. (Update: information received from P.F. on Sept. 10, 2017 - "In noting the Find a Grave information for them, you mention a possible third child. I show the 3rd child to be Charles Dalmas (age 3 in the 1880 census with them in Marshall Tnsp, Louisa County, IA). I show that he was born 17 Aug 1876 (calculated from death) and died 11 Jul 1880 although the Louisa County Cemetery records show 1886 by mistake.") Mary made annual visits to Jefferson County, Iowa to visit relatives, friends, and to promote the periodic Hisel/Heisel reunions (according to her January 12, 1924 Fairfield Daily Ledger obituary). * Possibly, but not confirmed by this contributor, this is the F/A/G memorial for this daughter: Katie E Ament, wife of Everett Sherman Ament. -------------- Obituaries: Fairfield Daily Ledger Wednesday Dec. 26, 1923 Pg. 1 Col. 5 MRS. M. DALMAS DIED AT WAPOLLO (sic) Funeral To Be Held There Friday Morning; Was Former Resident Here Mrs. Mary Dalmas, a sister of Louis Hisel, 700 West Washington and a former Jefferson county resident, died this morning at 2 o'clock at her home at Wapello after being taken seriously ill Monday of gall stones. The funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock and interment will take place near Wapello. Mrs. Dalmas was about 77 years of age and she was the widow of Victor Dalmas, who passed away about 33 years ago. Louis Hisel, and her nephew and his wife Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Prince and a niece Mrs. J. S. Droz have gone to attend the funeral services. --- Fairfield Daily Ledger Saturday, Jan. 12, 1924 Pg. 3 Col. 6 OBITUARY MRS. MARY DALMAS Mrs. Mary Dalmas, daughter of Anthony and Susan Hisel, was born in Belgium September 27, 1851, coming to this country at the age of three years. She spent all her young life here in this county until her marriage with Victor Dalmas, February 24, 1873. Since that time her home has been in Louisa county near Wapello. Mrs. Dalmas' mother died when she was a child of five years, while yet early in her teens, she took upon herself the duties of housekeeper and companion for her aged father, and ever fulfilled her duties faithfully. One brother, Louis of 700 West Washington street is the only surviving member of the original Hisel family. Mrs. Elizabeth Hosette, John, Joe and Peter Hisel have all passed to the Great Beyond. Mrs. Dalmas' husband was called to his Heavenly home in August 1894, and she took up the battles of life with the aid of her two devoted children who were but 16 and 18 years of age and they labored together faithfully, never murmuring nor complaining and they made a success and at the time of her death were the possessors of over 300 acres of fine Louisa county land. Her thoughts were always for her children's welfare and the success of all her friends, she was always cheerful, it being second nature of her's to make the best of life. She made an annual visit to Jefferson county relatives and friends and was one of the promoters of the Hisel reunion. She leaves her two children, Mrs. Kathryn Ament and A. M. Dalmas, both living near Wapello, and a host of friends and neighbors who mourn the loss of a good woman. Her illness was of short duration, only thirty-six hours, gallstones being the cause of her death. Everything that medical aid and skillful (sic. nursing ??) aid could do, was done, but all to no avail, death was the victor and at 2 o'clock, December 26, 1923, she quietly fell asleep. The last sad rites were held at the church in Wapello conducted by her pastor Rev. Father Coleman of Nichols and she was tenderly laid to rest in the Long Creek cemetery in sight of her old home where she had spent so many hours. Farewell, friend and neighbor.
