Read More	Mrs. Jane Cloud Dies At Her Home In Earlville, After Lingering Illness Jane Cloud, formerly Jane Malvin, was of English, Dutch, Scotch extraction, and was born in the State of New Jersey, July 18th, 1833. She continued to reside in the State of New Jersey with her parents until she grew to young girlhood, when the family moved to the state of Pennsylvania, where she lived for a few years, when she accompanied her parents from Pennsylvania in a prairie wagon across the plains of Ohio and Illinois to their pioneer home near Colesburg, Delaware county, Iowa. She, with her parents, Samuel and Jane Malvin, were part of the pioneer life of Delaware county. In 1852 she was joined in marriage with Marion Cloud, also a native of Pennsylvania, who came to Colesburg in 1848, to superintend the construction of a large flour mill, about three miles northwest of Colesburg, known as Bailey's Mill. She spent the first two years of her married life with her husband, while he was operating the mill, and then removed for four years with her husband to Greene county, Pennsylvania, where he conducted his father's mill, again returning to Iowa in 1858 to continue the operation of the Bailey flouring mill for another two years. In the meantime, her husband purchased the old home farm near Colesburg, and in 1860 they moved to Earlville, Iowa, where she lived continuously until the date of her death on the 19th day of April, 1921, at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 1 day. She was preceded in death in the 70's by her father, Samuel Malvin, in the 80's by her mother, Jane Malven, and by her deceased child, Samuel D. Cloud, and her husband, Marion Cloud, on the 15th day of April 1899. There was born to Jane Cloud and Marion Cloud, in the order of their age, the following children; Sarah, Alice, Jennie, Jeremiah D., Samuel D., Carrie B., William E., Hattie L., Josie I., Philip M., and Albert M., all of these children surviving except Samuel D., who died in infancy; Sarah, now residing in Dubuque, Iowa; Alice, Jennie, Carrie F., Hattie L., and Josie I., residing at Earlville, Iowa, Jeremiah D., at Cedar Rapids, Iowa and William E., Philip M., and Albert M., at Manchester, Iowa. Since the death of her husband Marion Cloud, on the 15th day of April, 1899. Jane Cloud, with the assistance of her daughter, Alice, Jennie, Carrie B., Hattie L., and Josie I., have conducted the merchantile business at Earlville, Iowa, owned by her husband at the time of his death, the last- named daughters devoting the greater part of their life to their mother, and residing with her continuously. Jane Cloud, while a woman of small stature, was possessed with remarkable health, and during her entire life until within the last three years, was a woman of indefatigable industry in her home. About three years ago, she had a serious fall and injured her hip, since which time she has been more or less confined to her chair, although at all times without complaining. Even in her last illness she had no organic disease. She continued to live seemingly until the vital organs ceased to function, and her life passed out without a struggle, seemingly as the closing of a perfect day. Jane Cloud acquired her education in the country schools of Colony Township, later in high school in Colesburg, in the Academy at Maquoketa, completing her education in Northfield College, Northfield, Minn. When a girl she joined the Congregational church at Colesburg, Iowa, and has remained a member of that church until the time of her death. She and her husband both faithfully and substantially labored and contributed in the building of the then splendid Congregational church at Colesburg, Iowa, and in the maintenence and supporting thereafter of same. During all the years that she and her husband remained on the farm near Colesburg, when she was not ill, she , with her husband and family would be found each Sunday attending church and Sunday School at the Congregational church at Colesburg. She was active in her humble and modest way in every part of church work she could help in, and her husband, Marion Cloud, was respectively deacon, trustee and chorister in the church and superintendent of the Sunday school. She and her husband, by their Christian life, devotion and convictions, led each of their children into the membership of their church, and at this time each of them retain their membership in such church. Jane Cloud and her husband Marion Cloud, both decided that each of their children should be given a splendid education, and as soon as the children were old enough they were started in the country school near the farm, later sent to the high school in Colesburg, Iowa, and while still living on the farm in the early ?0's she with her husband by their labor and sacrifices and determination to educate the children, started Jennie, Jeremiah D., Carrie B., and William E., though badly needed at home on the farm, across the country with their trunks packed in a wagon, to Hopkinton, Iowa, to attend Lenox College, where they remained until three graduated, one on account of illness not remaining to the end of her course , and one of them there after entered the Law Department at the University of Iowa, but on account of the death of a very close banking friend of the family, at such friend's request that he take charge of a bank temporarily left school at Iowa City and never returned, continuing in the operation of the friend's bank. Continuing in their sacrifices and determination that the younger children of their family should secure a like education, she with her husband moved to Earlville, Iowa, in 1888, for the purpose of affording them a better opportunity of getting such high school and college education, and after attending high school there, she and her husband sent three more of the younger children to Lenox College, two remaining there a term of years, and one graduating, and later two of her sons graduated from the Law School of the University of Michigan. Jane Cloud and her husband, Marion Cloud, are credited by their children for this devotion and sacrifice they made to educate them, enabling four of them to graduate from Lenox College, three to get the benefits of a number of year's college work, and one the benefits of the University of Iowa, and two obtaining a legal education at the University of Michigan. Mrs. Cloud and her husband, were respected in the communities where they have lived. While living on the farm they were consulted by neighbors and friends frequently in their troubles and difficulties, for consolation and help. Owing to their over credence in helping out friends in need, twice they lost for friends more than the total value of their own worth, but still they did not lose faith and started anew to re-build their fortune. Mrs. Cloud was in the fullest sense, a mother and homemaker. Blessed with wonderful health, she consecrated and devoted her life to her family. She was ever watchful of every little need of her children and her husband and maintained an ideal home. She was one who always sacrificed, that her family might be blessed. Like all pioneer mothers, she was exceedingly industrious, frugal and careful. She looked forward weekly for the coming in of her children during the last years of her life, and they all returned home for the joy they gained from her smile, caress and bendiction. In her last illness, all of her ten living children were present almost constantly, and knowing her end was approaching, she made no complaint whatever. She seemed simply to have "fought a good fight, kept the faith and finished her course". The funeral services for Mrs. Cloud will be held at the Congregation church at 2:30 P. M., Thursday, April 21st. Rev. W. J. Suckow, pastor of the Congregational church, will deliver the sermon from the text. II Timothy 4 Chapter, 7-8 vs., "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course I have kept the faith." Rev. A. W. Wiggins, pastor for several years of the Congregational church at Earlville, now at Garner, Iowa, will participate in delivering a short sermon on her life work. Rev. L. D. Stubbs, pastor of N. E. church at Earlville will deliver the prayer. The body will interred beside that of her husband, in Fairview cemetery, at Earlville, Iowa Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa - April 20, 1921
