Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. N.E., Aberdeen, with Rev. Allan Schoonover officiating. Janiece Hales was born Dec. 14, 1924, at Aberdeen, S.D., to Ora Ross and Ruth (Smith) Hales. She grew up on a farm near Ipswich and graduated from Ipswich High School. She attended Northern State Teachers College where she received her teacher's certificate. She taught country school in Powell Township for two years. Janiece was married to Lester Ernst. They farmed in the Ipswich area until 1952. They resided in several communities throughout South Dakota and then returned to Ipswich in 1962. She worked in Ipswich until she retired in 1984. Janiece continued to live in Ipswich until moving to Sioux Falls in 1992 where she resided at Southridge. She is survived by six sons, Bill Ernst of Lennox, S.D., Kevin (Bonnie) Ernst of Aberdeen, S.D., Charlie (Patty) Ernst of Ebensburg, Pa., Roger Ernst of Spokane, Wash., Tom Ernst of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mark Ernst of Seattle, Wash.; three daughters, Janelle Dyvig of Tea, S.D., Julie Gregory of Broken Bow, Neb., Judy McPherson of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters, Willa Beitelspacher of Ipswich, S.D., Joy Lerew of Aberdeen, S.D.; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons and one brother. Casketbearers will be grandsons, Charlie Ernst, Jordan Ernst, Chaz Van Orman, Beau Dyvig, Alex Dyvig, Joseph Gregory, Steve Ernst and Scott Braun. Published in the Aberdeen News on 3/30/2005.
