Joy died Thursday, June 29, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen. Allie Joy Hales was born on Aug. 24, 1929, to Ora Ross and Ruth (Smith) Hales in rural Ipswich, S.D. She grew up and attended school there, graduating from Ipswich High School with the class of 1947. Joy worked for Benson Optical in Aberdeen until her marriage. Joy married Theodore "Ted" Lerew on Dec. 23, 1947, at Aberdeen, S.D. They moved to rural Faulkton and made their home on a farm there. Joy was a homemaker and helped with the farm and their construction business. Joy was active in Ted's political campaigns and managed the farm while Ted served in the legislature. Joy was also kept busy raising five daughters. Ted and Joy moved to Aberdeen in 1992. Joy was a member of the Cresbard Legion Auxiliary and the South Dakota Democratic Party. She served as an election judge for many years. Joy often volunteered to help with many of her daughters' school and 4-H activities. After moving to Aberdeen, Joy volunteered at Avera St. Luke's Hospital until her health forced her to stop. Joy cherished time spent with friends and family, liked playing games and cards and shopping at the mall. During her years on the farm, she enjoyed entertaining family and friends during pheasant hunting season. She enjoyed reading the paper and clipping articles about her grandchildren. Her greatest joy came from her grandchildren. She loved to attend as many of their activities as possible. Although Joy battled serious illness since her late 30s, those around her could rarely tell it by her demeanor. She had a smile that could light up a room, and it often graced her face. Her attitude and the determination to remain independent served as an inspiration to all. Grateful for having shared Joy's life are her daughters: Tammy (Craig) Williams, Alden, Minn., Patricia (Dave) Wicks, Watertown, S.D., Nancy Lerew (Dave Fenner), Maplewood, Minn., Susan (Brent) Fisher, Rochester, Minn., and Joell (Ed) Fischbach, Mellette, S.D.; her grandchildren, Stacy Williams, Jason (Amy) Williams, Elli (Joe) Wicks-Haerter, Andrew Wicks, Alex Fenner, Jenni Fisher, Lyndsey (Mark) Grier, Austin Fischbach, Alyssa Fischbach, and Landon Fischbach; her great-grandchildren, Colton, Macy and Katilyn; sister, Willa Beitelspacher, Ipswich; brothers-in-law, Orville Lerew, Faulkton, Wilbur Lerew, Miller, S.D., and Vernon Lerew, Cresbard; and sisters-in-law, LaVerne Barton, Aberdeen, Delores Hales, Aberdeen, and Edna Mae Meade of Gillette, Wyo. Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Ora Ross and Ruth, husband, Ted, brother Dave Hales, and sister Janiece Ernst.
