Description	:	Mary Jean (Olson) Brown, 87, of Shell Rock, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2013, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock. Mary Jean was born August 24, 1925, the daughter of Andrew N. and Bessie Lillian (Foltz) Olson on Schermerhorn Farm in Mason City, Iowa. Her family moved to Waukon, Iowa, when she was in junior high and she graduated from Waukon High School in 1943. Mary Jean was born August 24, 1925, the daughter of Andrew N. and Bessie Lillian (Foltz) Olson on Schermerhorn Farm in Mason City, Iowa. Her family moved to Waukon, Iowa, when she was in junior high and she graduated from Waukon High School in 1943. She received a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in 1947. On July 23, 1946, she was united in marriage to Thomas Eugene Brown in Waukon, Iowa. They moved to Shell Rock in 1953. Mary Jean taught private piano lessons for many years and was employed by Security State Bank from 1970 until her retirement in 1986. Mary Jean was a longtime member of the Shell Rock United Methodist Church where she served as organist for many years. She was also very active in the women's activities of the church and served as the church financial secretary for 23 years. She was active in raising funds for local charities and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She was a devoted mother and loved playing piano, organ, attending classical musical performances and doing crossword puzzles. She is survived by two sons; Steven Brown of Shell Rock and David (Cindy) Brown of Iowa City, two daughters; Carolyn (Carl Anthony) Brown of Conway, Arkansas and Susan Brown of Shell Rock, two grandchildren; Matthew and Benjamin Brown, a step-granddaughter; Lauren Cothern, and two step-great-grandchildren; Evan and Aedan Cothern. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her siblings Robert Andrew Olson, Bonita Ruth Olson Sageng and Betty Ann Olson Thorsen. Memorial services will be held on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 11:00 am at Shell Rock United Methodist Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Dan Fernandez officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa. Mary Jean's body has been cremated, there will be no public visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or KHKE Public Radio. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home of Shell Rock is assisting the family with arrangements.
