He was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Colesburg, son of Joseph and Ardys Hartley Brown. He married Mary Jean Olson on July 23, 1946, in Waukon. Mr. Brown graduated from Waukon High i. j School, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then graduated from Iowa University. He married Mary Jean Olson on July 23, 1946, in Waukon. Mr. Brown graduated from Waukon High i. j School, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then graduated from Iowa University. He was a band director in several Iowa schools, including Bedford and Stuart. He finished his band director career in Waverly-Shell Rock School System from 1950 to 1981. He was a member of Shell Rock United Methodist Church, where he had previously served as choir director. Survived by: his wife; two sons, Steven and David (Cindy) of Iowa; two daughters, Carolyn (Carl) Anthony of Arkansas, and Susan Brown of Iowa; two grandchildren, Matthew and Benjamin Brown; a step granddaughter, Lauren Cothern; and two step great-grandchildren, Evan and Aedan Cothern. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Shell Rock United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation; his body has been cremated. Gene enjoyed playing golf, piano tuning and playing trombone in the Wartburg Symphony. Gene was born February 11, 1923, the son of Joseph and Ardys (Hartley) Brown in Colesburg, Iowa. Shortly thereafter he and his mother moved to Waukon to live with his grandparents. He graduated from Waukon High School and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. He then graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (U.N.I.) and Drake University. On July 23, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Jean (Olson) in Waukon, Iowa. Gene was a band director in several Iowa schools, including Bedford and Stuart, Iowa. He finished his band director career in Waverly-Shell Rock School system from 1950 to 1981. Gene was a longtime member of Shell Rock United Methodist Church where he had previously served as choir director. He enjoyed playing golf, piano tuning, and playing trombone in the Wartburg Symphony. He is survived by his wife Mary Jean of Shell Rock, two sons; Steven Brown of Shell Rock and David (Cindy) Brown of Iowa City, two daughters; Carolyn (Carl Anthony) Brown of Conway, Arkansas and Susan Brown of Shell Rock, two grandchildren; Matthew and Benjamin Brown, a step-granddaughter; Lauren Cothern, and two step-great-grandchildren; Evan and Aedan Cothern. He is preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at the Shell Rock United Methodist Church, Shell Rock, with Pastor Dan Fernandez officiating. There will be no visitation; his body has been cremated. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
