Description	:	Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Feb. 16, for Mrs. Mary Matheson, a Buena Vista County pioneer who passed away at the home of Mrs. George Wilbur in Sioux Rapids on February 13. Services were held in the Green Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids and in the Wilkinson Funeral Home at Alta. Interment was in the Elk Cemetery north of Alta. Rev. H. H. Mary Louise Miller Matheson was born in Pectonica, Ill., April 29, 1862, and passed away February 13, 1951, in Sioux Rapids at the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 14 days. She was the third child of John K. and Emma Riggle Miller. When a very small child, with her parents she moved to Manchester where she achieved her education and grew to womanhood. At the age of 18 she with her parents and remainder of the family came to Buena Vista County, settling on a farm several miles north of Alta. In the fall of 1881 she was united in marriage to Samuel Matheson. To this union were born two children Myrtle Pedersen of Sioux Rapids and Ross L. Matheson of Grand Island, Nebr. In the spring of 1898 her husband passed away. She and her son continued operation of the farm until the spring of 1907, when she moved to Alta. She resided there until 1922, when she moved to Storm Lake. She resided there until July, 1950, when she was forced by failing health to leave her home. Her father, mother, three sisters, and one brother preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her family and also her husband’s family. She leaves to mourn her departure, a daughter, a son, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Matheson was a loving and thoughtful mother. She loved her home and welcomed all those who entered there. Due to the icy road no relatives from a distance were able to attend the final rites. Another pioneer has passed from the swiftly thinning numbers who proudly and heroically earned the name. Mary Miller, with the devotion to her parents, children, and friends, one of the last of this pioneer generation, has passed thru the portals into the grand (???).
