Description	:	Mary Lucille “Lu” Harpster died Saturday, April 23, 2011, in her home in Ponca City at the age of 93. She was born on a farm in Vinita on Nov. 2, 1917, to John Webb Hendryx and Nola Docia Walker. The family soon moved to Coffeyville, Kan., where Lu attended school through junior college. Read More	Mary Lucille “Lu” Harpster died Saturday, April 23, 2011, in her home in Ponca City at the age of 93. She was born on a farm in Vinita on Nov. 2, 1917, to John Webb Hendryx and Nola Docia Walker. The family soon moved to Coffeyville, Kan., where Lu attended school through junior college. Lu’s long life spanned the days from horse and buggy to the marvels of the 21st century. She recalled the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. Her girlhood days were full of picnics at the river, swimming (Lu was a fearless diver), and visits to country relatives. Lu told about the fun she and her brother Bill had climbing ropes in their barns. Lu was a good student, especially in mathematics, and from an early age she loved reading with a passion. A weekly trip to the library with her mom was a fond memory. Years later she continued this tradition with her own children at the Ponca City Library, where she was delighted to find you could take as many books as you wanted! Lu and her sister Jeanie moved to San Diego in 1940, where they had grand adventures in a much different San Diego than today. They lived in a little cottage near the beach and rode a trolley to work. When the war broke out, Lu went to work at an aircraft factory. Lu met George, a navy officer, on the beach. After a whirlwind romance, hastened by the fact that George would soon be shipped out, they married. This marriage proved to be a lasting bond — 67 years later they still loved each other. Lu and George moved to Ponca City in 1947 and have lived here ever since. Lu is survived by her husband, George; son, Brian Harpster, daughter-in-law Holly and granddaughter, Hillary; daughter, Martha Engel and son-in-law Mike; and granddaughter, Emily Engel Bitar and husband Jamil and their daughter, Amy Rose. Lu was a kind, intelligent woman with a good sense of humor. She loved flowers and her gardens were spectacular. Most of all Lu loved children. Neighborhood kids were always welcome at Lu’s house. She delighted in her granddaughters, Emily and Hillary. She loved her neighbor girls, Joycie and Christie, and her great-granddaughter, Amy Rose. The family is grateful for the loving care given to Lu by the late Felica Bales, by Ruthie Sentel, T.J. Webster, Cindy Higgins, Tina Taylor, Shirley Venable and all the kind and capable staff of Hospice of North Central Oklahoma. At Lu’s request there will be no services.
