She was born in Summitville Ohio to late John C. and Mary Ellen (Matthews) Burke on March 13, 1915. She was preceded in death by husbands, Joseph Bryan, Albert Lodge, and 2 brothers John J. Burke, and Francis Burke. Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou (Bryan) Popa of Salem, and son David J. She was born in Summitville Ohio to late John C. and Mary Ellen (Matthews) Burke on March 13, 1915. She was preceded in death by husbands, Joseph Bryan, Albert Lodge, and 2 brothers John J. Burke, and Francis Burke. Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou (Bryan) Popa of Salem, and son David J. (Joan) Bryan of North Olmsted, OH, stepchildren Larry (Priscilla) Lodge, Jerry, (Mary) Lodge, and Thom (Karen Lodge), and sister in law Marie Burke, whom she thought of as the sister she never had. She also leaves grandchildren Clyde Wolfgang, Barbara McDonald, Colleen (Dave) Murdock, Shannon (Tim) Wilson, Joe (Kelly) Bryan, Kara (Shawn) Daley, Erin (Kevin) Owsley. In addition, she was blessed to have 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves many close neighbors, friends and the staff at Blossom Rehab. who took such good care of her. Mary was lovingly known as "Grammy" to her family, friends and neighbors. Mary moved to Salem with her family when she was 8 years old into the family home, where 5 generations have resided. She attended St Paul's Catholic School and graduated from Salem High School in 1932. She loved reading and creative writing and was manager of one of the first girls' basketball teams for Salem. Mary would have liked to have gone to college, but it was The Depression so she went to work at "Kresges" to help support her family. While her faith and her family were her main priorities, she had a huge love of politics. She was one of the first women to serve on Salem City Council. While on council she was the first woman to serve on the Planning Commission and the Zoning board. She held positions as precinct committeeman, and on the County Democratic Executive Committee. Mary also enjoyed being a poll worker for many years. She was a member of the Salem Democrat Club and The Salem Women's Democrat Club. In 1991 Mary was honored as "Democrat of the Year" with Senator John Glenn presenting her with the award. She was also present in 1960 as a council member when presidential Candidate John F. Kennedy came to Salem for a campaign stop. Not only did Mary enjoy local politics, she always kept up on state, country and world political events. She always loved a lively debate on current political happenings and enjoyed the intrigue, idealism, human interest, and sense of accomplishment that came with politics. In addition to her political interests, Mary served on the board for the Salem YWCA, volunteered for RSVP, belonged to the Ohio Bell Telephone Pioneers, and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren as they participated in sporting events. Mary relied on her faith to guide her everyday and gave back to God and her church, St Paul's Catholic Parish, most of her life. She was one of the first lay Eucharistic Ministers and delivered communion to shut ins. She was a member of many faith-based organizations including LCBA, NCCW, and Legion of Mary. She was the first of four generations in the family to attend and graduate from St. Paul's School. Mary loved the outdoors, working in her yard, and planting flowers. She was a member of the Salem Shade Tree Commission, Salem Area Humane Society, and always had a pet in her life. She was a hard worker and retired from Ohio Bell Telephone Company in 1977 where she worked for 32 years as a Service Rep to support her family. She loved watching college football on TV, especially Notre Dame football. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and was fortunate enough to make a trip to Ireland for her 75th birthday. Mary will be greatly missed by her family who will remember her compassion for others, sense of humor, and dedication to family, faith and friends. She will be remembered by all for a life well lived. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Paul Catholic Church with Father Robert Edwards officiating.
