Description	:	Mary was born in Sneedville, TN, to Kenneth & Dora (Jones) Depew. She was their second child; the first baby--a son named Dewey--had been born and had died in the same year. Kenneth also had another son Robert who was being raised by his grandparents after the death of Kenneth's first wife Laura (Jordan). Robert would eventually come to live with his father's new wife and family, and they became a family of ten children--eight girls and two boys. She was their second child; the first baby--a son named Dewey--had been born and had died in the same year. Kenneth also had another son Robert who was being raised by his grandparents after the death of Kenneth's first wife Laura (Jordan). Robert would eventually come to live with his father's new wife and family, and they became a family of ten children--eight girls and two boys. About 1917, Kenneth Depew moved his family from Sneedville to Rose Hill, VA. He bought a farm there (the Emit Snodgrass place) and Mary attended Flatwoods School. Mary met Estie Hobbs, who was born and raised in Hagan, VA, all in Lee County. They were married at White Shoals Church and moved to a rented white house with a swinging bridge across the Powell River. This is where their first child Eula was born. Later they moved a short distance away to The Cedars and rented another house (owned by the Tyler's) and there and had three more children. When Estie was called into the service during WWII, Mary moved her family of four children to Highland, MD. Another two children were born in Maryland. Then, in 1943 Estie and Mary moved to a 10-acre farm in Dayton owned by William & Emma Maloney, paid the taxes, and in January 1944 bought this farm from Emma Maloney. (Interestingly, the farmhouse had been built by Hamilton Henry Simpson.) After Estie's death in 1957, Mary had a brick rancher with a separate apartment in the basement built on 1 acre of the property. She sold lots off of the original 10-acres--to the Kiwanis Club, to her son Earl Hobbs, and to her grandson Donald Simpson. Mary was very industrious, never wasting a plant, a piece of wrapping paper, a piece of material, etc. She had her children and grandchildren working and picking blackberries, and it was said she would have made a good boss. She busied herself with the Dayton Homemakers, the Assembly of God camp meetings, the Dayton Foursquare Church. She went to California with some friends and while there took a course in home nursing, which led to her doing a lot of home nursing. She liked being around people, visiting people in the hospital, and going to church meetings. She was cared for in her home by her daughters until she went to the Golden Age Guest Home in Sykesville in January 1993, and passed away there with two of her daughters by her side.
