The biography for her son, Nathan B Regester, stated that she was born in 1823. The original headstone shown has her age at death as 54y 3m 3d. Her Industrial Era obituary, however, listed her age at death as "45 years, 3 months and 3 days". It may be that the IE obituary reversed the year digits, so it reads 45 instead of 54. Sigh. At her residence four miles North of Fairfield, Iowa, on Thursday, May 7, 1874, Mary Register (sic), wife of John Register (sic), aged 45 years, 3 months and 3 days. Eight years ago in company with her husband, and three children, she came from Washington County, Pa. to this place, leaving a large circle of friends and relations behind them, where her great usefulness and unbounded charity had, won for her an enviable esteem among all classes of society. None there, knew her but to love her. Yet on last Thursday, surrounded by an affectionate husband and two children, she silently in the light of a Christians Faith and Hope, drew the mantle of death around her feeble frame, and passed beyond our feeble sight. As we passed to look on those familiar features, we knew the heart was cold and still, but we felt that the messenger of death came to her, as comes to a little child to a vase of early flowers, upon which it first smiles sweetly, gently tokening over and pressing it long to its bosom, with tender emotion. All is still and calmly beautiful, and in the silence of this blessed home, with our hearts full of dear and holy memories, we turn away from the darkness of death, to the light of Heaven, from the dreadful grave to the resurrection eternal, from the coffin and shrowd (sic), to the splendor of the home of the just, from the tears of a broken hearted husband, to the hallelujahs of a blessed wife.
