Description	:	Mary Smith and Thomas O'Brien came from Ireland, but the county is unknown. Before she married Thomas, Mary was working in the home of an attorney and his family in Illinois. The young attorney Abraham Lincoln came to visit the family. At breakfast time he went to the kitchen and let her use his pocket watch to time his eggs while they were cooking. Read More	Mary Smith and Thomas O'Brien came from Ireland, but the county is unknown. Before she married Thomas, Mary was working in the home of an attorney and his family in Illinois. The young attorney Abraham Lincoln came to visit the family. At breakfast time he went to the kitchen and let her use his pocket watch to time his eggs while they were cooking. Little did she know that she was cooking for a future President of our United States. Early in the O'Brien's marriage they had five children (three boys and two daughters) that died during an outbreak of diphtheria. While still in Illinois they had seven sons and moved to Nebraska. Later they homesteaded in southwesten NE in Dundy County. Mary died on her birthday. (The grave marker photos are courtesy of her great grandson Patrick Joseph O'Brien Jr. The four markers are for Thomas and Mary O'Brien; son Robert O'Brien; and Robert's infant daughter, Margaret one month old in Oct. 1909, who died from being bounced out of a wagon when the team ran away. Robert died later that year on December 22, 1909. Very few people are buried in this old country cemetery between Imperial and Benkelman, Nebraska.)
