If you look at his person page on FamilySearch.org and examine all the sources you can see that there are about seven (give or take) sources that put his birth in Canada, and only one, his birth registration, that puts him as born in South Haven, Michigan. This includes his naturalization paperwork, the actual image thereof which is attached to his FamilySearch person page as a source. If he was born in the U.S. he would not have needed to fill out a naturalization form. His birth was registered in Michigan (in Grand Rapids passport office) for the purposes of easy citizenship application, since he was less than one year old. This was common practice at the time. The record that tipped me off to the fact he was born in Ontario was the family's 1880 U.S. Census entry in South Haven. It states that he was born in Ontario (Canada English). Then I started digging and found that all but one of the sources stated a Canadian birth. They came to the United States in about March or April of 1880, following Matthew's mother Maria Christie's extended family, who had immigrated in 1878 and 1879, a few cousins as early as 1873 actually.
