The profusion of beautiful flowers was expressive of the love and respect in which the community held Math Dietrich. Rev. S.A. Siewert, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, preached the funeral sermon, and songs were sung by a quartette composed of Sumner Vincent, Ray Rankin, Alfred Humfeld, and Fred Parrott. The pallbearers were Hal Akers, Frank Myers, Fred Schrader, John Lawrence, and R.A. Bruggeman. Interment was made in the family lot in the Broughton Cemetery. Mathias Dietrich is no more. He was born with a life promise, on his father's farm in Grant Township, Clay County, Kansas, on the 24th day of February 1887. He was a sturdy and industrious youth. He attended the neighborhood public school and finished the course. He attended for a time the state agricultural college at Manhattan, where he acquitted himself with credit. He was almost immediately employed as a bookkeeper and assistant in the First National Bank at Clay Center. His progress was steady and remarkably rapid. His close application to duty in a few years brought him to be cashier of that institution. Along with his duties as a banker, he accepted and filled many positions of trust in community work. Forgetful of himself ever, and thoughtful of the wants of others, he expended himself beyond his strength, robust though he was, and realized too late that he most curtail his activities. A patriotic son of a patriotic father, he left his position in the bank. and volunteered for military duty, though his health was such that he would not have been called by the government. He served till discharged by an honorable discharge, and again took up his vocation of banking. By his straightforward manner, fairness and honest dealing, he endeared himself to the whole community. And such was the kindly regard in which he was universally held, that by the common consent of all factions and parties, he was made city treasurer without opposition. His health again giving away, he sought renewed strength in a sanitarium in Silver City, New Mexico. But it was not so to be; and on the 28th day of May 1922, this life of promise was closed. He leaves to mourn his loss, his mother, Rosine Dietrich, his sister, Tillie Chapman, wife of C.D. Chapman, and his brother George Dietrich, both of Broughton, Kan. His father preceded him in death. Mathias Dietrich lived a full life, though short in space of time, and his enduring monument and crowning glory is the heritage of established integrity that he bequeathed to honor his country, his city, his family, and friends.
