Description	:	Matilda Jane (Edwards) Jako was the daughter of George Edwards (1816-1865) and Elizabeth (Churchill) Edwards (1825-1905). The family is listed in the 1865 Nebraska Census in Otoe County, Nebraska, and at that time the family consisted of George Edwards (50), Eliza Edwards (38), John Patch (17), Ann Patch (8), Mary Edwards (4), and Matilda Edwards (4). John Patch and Ann Patch were the children of Elizabeth Edwards by her prior marriage to Zachariah Patch. The family is listed in the 1865 Nebraska Census in Otoe County, Nebraska, and at that time the family consisted of George Edwards (50), Eliza Edwards (38), John Patch (17), Ann Patch (8), Mary Edwards (4), and Matilda Edwards (4). John Patch and Ann Patch were the children of Elizabeth Edwards by her prior marriage to Zachariah Patch. Elizabeth Edwards had been born in Chaffcombe, Somerset, England, and she was the daughter of Isaac Churchill (1793-1879) and Mary (Best) Churchill (1791-1873). The 1900 U.S. Census records her immigration date to the United States as 1848. George Edwards immigrated to the United States from Ireland, according to the 1865 Nebraska Census, and he married Elizabeth (Churchill) Patch in 1860 at Nebraska City, Otoe, Nebraska. The 1860 U.S. Census for Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska, lists George Edwards as a carpenter, age 42, born in Ireland. Matilda Edwards, age 17, was living Sterling, Johnson County, Nebraska, with her mother Eliza and step-father George Shannon according to the 1880 U.S. Census. George Shannon was a farmer, age 58, born in Ohio, per the 1880 U.S. Census. Eliza had married George W. Shannon in 1873. The 1880 Census indicates that Matilda's family was living close to relatives John Patch, his wife Eliza, and their four children as well as Thomas and Catherine Churchill and their nine children. "The History of Lewis County, WA" by Alma and John Nix, Eds., (Lewis County Historical Society, 1985) says in a bio of John Patch that "John's mother Eliza Churchill Patch Edwards Shannon and third husband George Shannon had sold out their homestead in Sterling and had been living in Castle Rock by June of 1882." Although not stated in this account, it is likely that Matilda came west with her mother and step-father, since her first child, Henry, was born in Castle Rock, Cowlitz County, Washington in 1883. Matilda Edwards married Perry J. Shannon about 1881. Their children: Henry Herbert Shannon 1883-1949 Viola Jane Shannon 1885-1953 Charles Chester Shannon 1887-1957 Judson James Shannon 1889-1969 Benjamin Boyd Shannon 1896-1981 The 1900 U.S. Census lists Matilda Shannon as a widow living in Castle Rock, Cowlitz County, Washington, with her children: Henry H. (17), Viola J. (15), Charles C. (14), James J. (11), and Bennie B. (4). Also living with Matilda was her mother, Eliza Shannon, age 74. A Tacoma City Directory for 1907 indicates that Eliza, widow of Perry Shannon, was living with her sons Herbert, Charles and Judson on Union Avenue in Tacoma, where Judson was working as a boilermakers helper. On June 1, 1909, Matilda Shannon and John Jako (1860-1942) were married by a Justice of the Peace in Lewis County, Washington, a second marriage for each of them. The 1910 U.S. Census finds Matilda and John Jako living in Centralia, Lewis County, Washington, with John's daughter by a previous marriage, Blanche Jako, age 7, and four of Matilda's children by her previous marriage: Benjamin (14), Henry (27), Charles (23), and Judson (21). John Jako's profession was listed as "retail merchant" in a grocery store, and he was 50 years old. By the date of the 1920 U.S. Census, John and Matilda Jako were living in Raymond, Pacific County, Washington, with Matilda's sons Henry Shannon (37) and Benny Shannon (22). John was working as a millwright in a lumber mill, and Matilda's sons were employed at a box factory. The family was still living in Raymond by the date of the 1930 U.S. Census, with both John Jako and Ben Shannon being employees of a lumber mill. Also living with the family in 1930 was John Patch, age 79, step-brother of Matilda. John Jako had retired by the date of the 1940 U.S. Census, and he and Matilda were still living in Raymond. During that year, Matilda's daughter Viola (55) and son Henry (56) were living with John and Matilda. Henry was listed as widowed, and Viola was listed as divorced. This census indicated that Matilda had completed school through 6th grade, while John's schooling had ended at the 4th grade. Matilda's husband, John Jako, died on 27 June 1942, and Matilda passed away on 23 August 1956.
