The entire community bowed with sorrow unspeakable last Friday at the announcement of the death of one of our best neighbors, Mrs. Matilda Dale, whose continued illness had lasted about one year, and after all that medical skill and loving hands could do failed. The soul of one of Shelby county best women succumbed to earth forces and passed beyond mortal limitations. Matilda Smith was born, May 14, 1844, married Hiram Dale November 1865, died November 30, 1917; age 73 years 6 months and 16 days. To this union were borned [sic] six children. Two daughters, Lillie and Gussie, preceded her about sixteen years ago, the other four Mrs. Vivie Harrison, Mrs. Ivy Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Lea Quigley and Hiram (Bud) were present when the end came. She united with the Christian church many years ago. The [sic] was a kind and loving mother, ever ready to lend a helping hand in need. Her afflictions though fatal were borne with much patience and she often spoke of being ready and willing to go home to her Savior. Although the form of our good friend is removed and invisible except in sweet memory, yet her unfading impress on the lives and characters of friends and associates alike shall ring out to us until like some vast spirit of love it shall direct effort and life and a blessed fruition shall come because of the earth touch of Matilda Dale. In the profuse and beautiful floral tributes the touching words of sympathy, the great mingling of love and regret so manifest by the sad and impressive funeral at Bacon Chapel Sunday December 2. What can be paid to the stricken son and daughters whose purposes in life are shattered, be of . great courage with an unfaltering faith. The promises of God must be our retreat. No one can measure the grief of her beloved children. Their sorrow is beyond reach of mere human words of comfort. With an eye of faith they can look above to a brighter clime where there is no cloud in the sky, and seeing their loved one amid the shining throng praise heaven that gave them such a mother. "A precious soul from us is gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in their home, Which never can be filled. We love her, yes, we love her, But angels love her more; And they have sweetly called her, To yonder shining shore. The golden gate was open, A farewell voice said come, And with calm words unspoken, She gently entered home. How sadly we do miss you.
