Matt was educated in the Busch school, District #6. His education terminated with the Second McGuffey Reader, when his father was injured in a cave-in accident. Matt assumed the responsibility of operating the family farm at the young age of ten. A few years later Matt worked for Hageman construction for the wage of one dollar a day--a day being from sunup to sundown. About 1900 Matt and his brother John moved to Aurora, IL to work in the Burlington Railroad shops. In 1901 they returned to Adams County and purchased a farm in Section 10, Roseland township. Matt married Catherine Kaiser at Assumption Catholic church on October 29, 1903, the 27th anniversary of his parents's marriage. They were the first couple married in the newly erected brick church buiding. German was the language spoken in their home during the early years of their marriage. Matt and Catherine settled on their farm two miles east of Assumption where they experienced many joys as well as the hardships and struggles associated with farming on the great plains: droughts, hail, blizzards, and grasshoppers. To suppliment his farm income and support his large family, Matt did custom corn shelling and grain threshing throughout the Assumption community. During the less busy winter months he built barns and remodeled buildings in the community. Some of those barns still stand. In 1913 Matt built a new two-story brick farm house which is today occupied by one of his grandsons. They raised eleven of their twelve children in this house, one son dying in infancy. Matt served his commuunity as a road district supervisor, helped organize the Roseland Farmers Coop Association, and served on the Assumption church board for many years. Matt and Catherine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1953 with all their chidren and grandchildren present. They resided on their farm until Matt's death from "hardening of the arteries" on September 12, 1958. He was survived by his loving wife, Catherine, seven sons, four daughters, and 26 grandchildren.
