Description	:	Thomas Trausch, son of Thomas and Marguerita (Weiler) Trausch, was born in Stolzembourg, Luxembourg on May 5, 1844. His family operated the mill at Stolzembourg and he worked there as a young man. Thomas left Europe from Liverpool, England on September 15, 1870 and arrived at the port of New York on October 14th. His family operated the mill at Stolzembourg and he worked there as a young man. Thomas left Europe from Liverpool, England on September 15, 1870 and arrived at the port of New York on October 14th. From New York he traveled to Aurora, Kane County, IL where there was a large Luxembourg settlement. He signed his Declaration of Intention to become an American citizen at Aurora on October 21, 1872. Attracted by cheap land, Thomas came to Adams County in March 1876. March 31, 1876 he signed an application to buy NE1/4 Sec 17, Roseland township from the Burlington Railroad. The price was $5 per acre with a ten year contract. The first Trausch home in Adams County was a dugout in the side of a draw on this farm. This dugout with a frame room added to the front later would serve as the Trauxh family home for several years. Thomas married Anna Marie Schifferns, daughter of Peter and Susan (Pauli) Schifferns on October 20, 1876. They were married in the Busch school house (District #6) by Fr. Lechleitner, a circuit priest from Crete, NE. There was no Catholic church in Adams County at this time. Thirteen childen were born to this union. Their first child, Matt, was born in the dugout on September 29, 1877. On April 27, 1896 tragedy struck the Trausch family. Seventeen year-old John loaded his gun to go hunting. Seven year-old Edward was helping his mother with the dishes. John's gun discharged striking Edward in the head. He died instantly. Tragedy struck a second time on July 1, 1907. While his older brothers were shelling corn for Nick Kaiser, eight year-old Tony was standing in the center of the horse power driving the horses around. His foot slipped into the gears and the foot and ankle were badly mangled. He died later that day from loss of blood. The grief stricken parents buried a third son in the Assumption cemetery. An infant, Peter, had ded in 1883. In 1912 Thomas retired from the farm and moved into Roseland, He built a new brick house with brick from the Roseland brickyard which was operated by his sons. Both Thomas nd Anna died in this house. Anna, aged 63 years, died August 24, 1921 from cancer of the bowel. Thomas, aged 82 years, died February 19, 1926.
