Description	:	Matti was born in Ylistaro, Finland to Matti Syrjala Wiita and Justina Johansdotter Wiita. Soon after, his family moved to the Reini farm, changing their surname from Wiita to Reini. On Nov 8, 1900, Matti landed in Boston Harbor on the Ivernia and headed to Rockport, Massachusetts, where his father was already living. He worked as a miner and logger, eventually becoming a foreman and supervisor due to his ability to speak both English and Finnish well. Read More	Matti was born in Ylistaro, Finland to Matti Syrjala Wiita and Justina Johansdotter Wiita. Soon after, his family moved to the Reini farm, changing their surname from Wiita to Reini. On Nov 8, 1900, Matti landed in Boston Harbor on the Ivernia and headed to Rockport, Massachusetts, where his father was already living. He worked as a miner and logger, eventually becoming a foreman and supervisor due to his ability to speak both English and Finnish well. In 1904 he came to Washington State where, in 1906, he married Mathilda Huhtala (also from the Isokyro parish in Finland) and had a family. He became a US citizen in 1923. He was very active in the Finnish community and was a leader among his countrymen. From his work in the mines, he developed "black lung" and was confined to a sanitorium for the last years of his life. He was predeceased by his daughters Helia and Miriam and survived by his wife Mathilda, daughter Aune, sons George and Louie and sister Josefina Kitinoja. Matti was one of those brave, adventurous men who helped to build and settle our great country. May he rest in peace.
