Read More	Garden County News (Oshkosh, Nebraska), Aug. 3, 1961, Page 1 A resident of the Lewellen community for 53 years, Mrs. Mattie Mardis, died Friday [July 28, 1961] in the Oshkosh hospital. Her age at time of death was 88 years 9 months and 7 days. For the last few months she been in failing health. During the past three months she has been confined to the Oshkosh hospital. She was born October 21, 1872, at Grant City, Missouri, the daughter of Richard and Sarah Henry. She moved with her parents to Cozad at the age of seven. Six brother and five sisters were also in the family that moved, all except one preceding her in death. January 22, 1893, she was united in marriage at Cozad to Samuel B. Mardis. Four children were born to this union. In May of 1908 she and her husband and children came to Garden county, settling on a homestead eight miles north of Lewellen. In 1916 the family moved into Lewellen and that has since been the family home. Mr. Mardis succumbed in February of 1936. Survivors include her four children, F. W. Mardis, Mrs. Guy Roberts, Mrs. George Post and Mrs. Kenneth McCormick, all of Lewellen; one brother, Elmer Henry of Crook; 17 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Mardis was baptized in the Christian church as a young woman and later transferred her membership to the Lewellen Methodist church, remaining a faithful member of that church as long as her health permitted. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Wright Funeral home in Oshkosh with Rev. Marvin Moberly officiating. Burial was in the family plot in Ash Hollow cemetery.
