When people in town came down town Sunday morning they were told by the passer on the street that he had died very suddenly during the night. Very few of the people of the community knew that Maurice was sick. But the relatives and neighbors and friends knew that he was having the gripe, a fact which caused very little concern since so many of the people have been experiencing the same sickness. He took sick with this sickness a week before the death. The alarm over his condition came Saturday, however, when he complained of a thumping sensation in his head. The physician visited the home a number of times that day to relieve him. About two o’clock Sunday morning he became a great deal worse and about fifteen minutes after three he died the cause of death being cerebral hemorrhage. The whole community has been stricken by the graveness of this particular death. Maurice Selley was a man with a great deal of promise for the future. To have his life cut short when he had only begun to live the most prime years of his life is the part that seems to weigh most sorrowing friends and neighbors. Having only been married a few short months makes it seem the more gloomy for the young wife and their relatives, all of whom and especially the wife will have the sincere sympathy of all in their sorrow. Maurice Adelbert Selley, son of Martin Selley and Emma King was born March 11, 1885 about ten miles northwest of Villisca. He died at 3:15, January 16, at his home seven miles southeast of Villisca. At the time of his death he was thirty years, ten months, and five days old. His boyhood life was spent on the farm near Villisca. Later he moved to Villisca with his father’s family. After coming to Villisca he was engaged one year in the W. J. Rose restaurant in this city, for two years with W. A. Atwood in the piano business, and for a number of months at one time was street commissioner for the city of Villisca. On May 2, of last year he was married to Ruth Johnson of this city. They immediately moved to the farm southeast of Villisca where they were making their home at the time death entered the home. The deceased is survived by his wife, his father, M. V. Selley and by four brothers and one sister. The brothers are, Samuel W. Selley of Benkelman, Nebraska; Edward F. Selley of Nodawy, Frank O. Selley and Arthur E. of this vicinity and one sister, Mrs. Edith Lewis of this community. The mother preceded her son in death having died March 1, 1909. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in this city at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. E. S. Menocher of the Villisca Methodist Church.
