SELLEY DIED WHILE VISITING IN IOWA The Post was this week in receipt of a letter from Mrs. John Mitchem of Sedgwick, Kansas bring the sad news of the recent passing of her father, Samuel W. Selby at Clarinda, Iowa and with it her father's obituary as published in the local paper. This is what Mrs. Mitchem wrote, "Dear Sirs; Enclosed you will find a clipping from our local paper which I thought you might like to bring in your paper. My father had been so lonely since my mother's death in December. He had been real well though and wanted to go up into Iowa and had just been there about 10 days when stricken with a severe heart attack. He was sick five days. While he was there and at abut the same time he took sick, I was in the hospital and we have a baby boy born March 11. We called him James Richard. The folks always looked forward to the day that The Post came and especially enjoyed "Down Thru the Years." And now here is Mrs. Selley's obituary. Samuel Wells Selley, the son of Martin Van Buren Selley and Lucinda King Selley, was born October 30, 1870 in Windham, Iowa. He passed away in the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, Iowa, after a brief illness. He had gone to Iowa for a brief visit to see his sister and brothers and became ill while visiting them. In Mary boyhood, he moved with his parent to a farm near Sciola, Iowa. On March 22, 1893, he was united in marriage to Cora Emma Baker. They lived in Villisca, Iowa for 7 yers and then moved to Benkelman, Nebraska, where Mr. Selley operated the City Power Plant, farmed, and was in the real estate business. In 1921 they moved to a farm south of Monument, Kansas, where thy lived until 1951 when they moved to Sedgwick to make their home with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchem. To them were born five sons and five daughters. Four sons and one daughter preceded him in death and his devoted wife passed away December 21, 1951. Mr. Selley was a man who was devoted and generous to his family. He was a good neighbor and his sterling and unrepoachable character was never questioned. For the last few years, he had been handicapped because of il health and when his faithful companion passed away he made may comments that he was anxious to go to his reward. Serving him are his daughter, Mrs. Sally Kivette of Los Angles; Mrs. Hellene Markham of Denver, Mrs. June Everley of Lincoln, Nebraska, Nebraska, and Ms. Marjorie Mitchem of Sedgwick. Also his only son, Martin Selley of Oakley, Kanas; one sister, Mrs. Edith Lewis of Clarinda, Iowa; two brothers, Arthur and Frank Selley both of Villisca. Also 25 grandchildren , 13 great grandchildren, and man other relatives and friends. Memorial services were conducted on Thursday afternoon, March 20, at 2:30 o'clock in the First Christian Church of Sedgwick. Rev .Richard E. Vail, the pastor of the church and Rev. Gerald R. Black of Wichita, were the officiating ministers. Mrs. Betty Behymer sang, "Going Home" and "The Lord's Prayer." Her accompanist and organist was Mrs. Ruth Stutzman. Her organ selections were, "One Fleeting Moment," "The End of a Perfect Day," "When We're Going Home," and "When I've Done My Best." Casket bearers were al grandsons. These were LeRoy Everley, James Everley Martin W. Selley, Robert Selley, Archie Selley, Lewis Selley, Billy Selley, and William Markham. Interment was by the side of the late Mrs. Selley in the Hillside Cemetery in Sedgwick. Directors of the Kaufman Funeral Home were in charge of funeral arrangements.
