Max Fischer was born Dec. 15, 1919, to John and Magdalena (Feist) Fischer in Strasburgh, N.D. At an early age he moved with his parents to Parade, S.D. Later they moved to Eagle Butte, where he completed the seventh grade. Due to the Depression, he was forced to quit school. Throughout his teen-age years, he worked for the Works Progress Administration and on road construction. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 22, 1941, at Fort Snelling, Minn. He received his basic training in Camp Wallace, Texas, and served stateside in camps in North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and Massachusettes with a nine-month stay in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., where he worked with weather forecasting. He was sent to the European Theater, where he served in England, France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Bronze Star for action in the Battle of the Bulge, serving under Gen. George Patton in the 99th Division. He was honorably discharged at Camp Swift, Texas, on Oct. 15, 1945. After his military service, he worked on road construction. He took flight training and became a licensed pilot in 1947. He married Darlene King on Sept. 14, 1948 in Aberdeen. He worked at K.O. Lee, Aberdeen American News, Jewitt Drug and Gambles while going to school. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1953 from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, majoring in history. In 1957, he received a master's degree in school administration. In following years, he accumulated more than 40 hours of post graduate credits. He attended workshops while working for the federal government in education. In the early years of his career, he taught school in Faulkton, Henry, Orient and Fort Yates, N.D. In 1964, he became the superintendent of schools for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, serving the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe in Sisseton. He was employed in this capacity until his retirement Feb. 28, 1980. He married Louise Lesiak on Oct. 29, 1993, in Sisseton. He was a resident of Tekakwitha Nursing Center since Jan. 17. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, where he served as lector and assisted with parish functions. He was a member of the Fort Sisseton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3342. He raised and showed prize-winning pigeons for a number of years. After his retirement from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, he became an Arabian horse dealer, raising horses for sale and show. He loved playing cards and dancing. Survivors include his wife of Sisseton; four daughters, Pamela (Rick) Tockert of LaPorte, Ind., Sandra Fischer of Rapid City, Debra (David) Valnes of Eden, and Bonnie (Dan) Rice of Grand Forks, N.D.; five sons, Craig (Pat) Fischer of Sturgis, Terry (Karen) Fischer of Grand Forks, and Don (Beth) Fischer, Ron Fischer and Mark (Suzanne) Fischer, all of Sisseton; three sisters, Eva Bringman of Eagle Butte, and Irene Hanson and Mary Olson, both of Aberdeen; two brothers, Leo Fischer of Santa Ana, Calif., and Andrew Fischer of Aberdeen; 22 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters. Casket bearers will be Travis Valnes, emil Valnes, Nicholas Tockert, Peggie Rice, Heidi Hanson, Peter Fischer and Christopher Fischer.
