Max was born June 1, 1941 in Silver Creek, Nebraska to Clifford J. and Grace (Dick) Merrill. He was a strong man with a giant heart who never met a stranger. Max worked hard for everything he had. He was rich in the love of family and friends, a treasure he cherished and willingly shared with others. While some can create masterpieces with paint, clay, bronze or wood, Max was an artist while at the helm of a heavy piece of equipment or behind the wheel of a truck. Max was many things to many people, but above all he was a teacher, sharing his knowledge and the experiences he endured throughout his life with everyone he met. He understood that love, family, friends, and faith were the ingredients for a bountiful life. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, and sharing the splendor of the outdoors with all of his family and friends. His love for Cornhusker football was equal to that of the most die hard fan. Each of us will treasure the times, experiences and special memories we shared with him and will forever hold them in our hearts. On December 2, 1961 in Genoa, Nebraska, he married the love of his life, Kathleen M. Swantek, and together they began a life of love and grand adventure. In addition to his wife Kathy, he is survived by his children, Timothy D. Merrill of Phoenix, Arizona, James D. Merrill of North Platte, Diana L. (Shane) Zellaha of Spencer, Iowa, Steven J. (Dayna) Merrill of Piedmont, South Dakota, Lisa M. (Phil) Breen, Matthew R. Merrill, and Joshua F. Merrill, all of Alliance. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren; his sisters, Beverly Brandeburger and Barbara Van Dyke, both of Columbus, Nebraska; and his brothers, Keith Merrill of Columbus, Nebraska and Jack Merrill of Silver Creek, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bridgets Catholic Church in Hemingford with Father James Heithoff officiating. Wake services will be held Monday, April 20, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Church. Cremation will follow the services with inurnment later being in the Hemingford Cemetery.
