Description	:	Max Vernon Ray, the son of Eugene and Carrie Poe (sic) Ray, was born November 3, 1925, at Chester, Neb. He died Tuesday, December 31, 1991, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 66 years, one month, and 28 days. Max was baptized at the Methodist Church in Chester. He died Tuesday, December 31, 1991, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 66 years, one month, and 28 days. Max was baptized at the Methodist Church in Chester. He attended school in Chester, and, upon the completion of his education, he began farming. He was inducted into the Army of the United States on January 6, 1944, at Ft. Crook, Neb. He served his country during World War II in Europe. He received his honorable discharge on November 6, 1945, at Karlshafen, Germany, and he re-enlisted on November 7, 1945, at Karkshafen, Germany. He served until his final discharge on May 6, 1947, at Ft. Sill, Okla. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action during the war. He was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the American Theater World War II Victory Medal. Max was united in marriage to Lucille Frances Picha on January 19, 1944, at Concordia, Kan. To this union three children were born, Kathy, Larry, and Karen. Upon the completion of his military service, Max returned to his family in Nebraska, where he drove a truck for Ray Peake and Hill's Transportation. He began working for the State Department of Roads in 1951. In 1959, Max and his family moved from Chester to Hebron, where he became foreman with the State Department of Roads. He was also owner of Ray Marine for 28 years, and worked with the Marine business until the time of his death. Max was a life member of the V.F.W. in Hebron and also a member of Saxton Post No. 180 American Legion of Hebron; a member of Chester Lodge No. 298 A.F.&A.M.; a member of 78th Division Infantry Group; and also a member of the Lincoln Chapter of the D.A.V. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Carrie Ray; one brother, Harlan Ray; and one sister, Mrs. Ethel Hammons. He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Hebron; one son, Larry Ray and his wife, Eloise of Belleville, Kan.; two daughters, Mrs. Kathy Westhoff and husband Fred of Muskogee, Okla.; and Mrs. Karen Becker and husband Charlie of Lincoln; two brothers, Gus Ray and wife Clara of Chester; and John Ray and wife, Verline of Pocatello, Idaho; two sisters, Mrs. Nona Stroh of Fairbury; and Mrs. Myrtle Sweeney of Centralia, Wash.; and also eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 4, 1992, at the First United Methodist Church in Chester, with Reverends Randy Dilts and L. Patterson Culligan officiating. Interment was held at the Chester Cemetery in Chester. Military graveside services were conducted by Saxton Post No. 180 American Legion, Hebron. Masonic services were conducted by Chester Lodge No. 298 of Chester. Mr. Ken Hoge sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden." He was accompanied by Mrs. Dolan Frye. Casket bearers were Gene Ells, Stuart Sutton, Mike Dewey, Joe Westhoff, Jim Westhoff and Doug Westhoff. Services were conducted by Hacker Funeral Homes, Hebron and Bruning.
