Read More	The Chester Herald (Chester, NE), Thursday, February 26, 1925; pg. 1 Jack Ray Fatally Burned Saturday Kerosene Poured on Fire Blows Up Causing Death A very bad fire took place in our little city last Saturday morning about nine o'clock which resulted in the death of a very prominent young man of this community. The cause was the explosion of a coal can. Harlan Ray, after starting a fire in the heating stove, came back to look about it and found it to be apparently out. He took up the oil can to rekindle it when the explosion occured (sic). He was dressed only in his underwear which was spattered with the oil, igniting setting him on fire, also the interior of the room. Their baby was in the buggy just back of him and his body caught the charge of the explosion in its direction protecting it from igition. His first thought of course was to save his child and while he was aflame he succeeded in getting the baby from the house to safety. While burning he then run to the Lon Pressnall home near by calling for help. Mr. Pressnall seeing his condition, caught up a rug, and after Ray had rolled from he (sic) house to the street Pressnall succeeded in smothering the fire from his body. He was then taken into the Pressnall home and Dr. Stretton called. His body was badly burned and on account of the intense pain an anaesthetic (sic) was used for relief, and in spite of everything that could be done he passed away Sunday morning at 1:15. It was a very sad affair not only for his wife, his parents, his brothers and sisters and other relatives but the entire community as "Jack" as he was most commonly called was a great favorite among our young people. This was demonstrated by the large crowd that gathered on that eventful morning to extend sympathy and assistance. He was a young man of good habits and of that joval (sic) disposition that won the favor of all. Just the night before his tragic accident, he with his wife and little son, were to the school carnival, an annual joyous event he and his wife helped to promulgate, in connection with their school, a place they loved. Jack will be greatly missed but best of all he will be remembered by those who knew him best. The fire at the home was soon extinguished. The front room rug was burned from the floor and most of the furniture with the walls and woodwork charred. OBITUARY Harlan Glenwood Ray was born at Hebron Nebraska, June 27 1903 and departed this earthly life Febr. 22, 1925 his age being 21 years 7 months and 24 days. When seven years old his parents moved to Stoddard where they lived for ten years and five years ago the family came to Chester and Harlan graduated from the Chester High School with the class of 1924. This class attended the funeral in a body. He was married to Grace Duey February 20 1924 just a year and one day from the time of his decease. He made a profession of the Christian faith and united with the church a year ago. He leaves his wife, infant son Roland LaVern; father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Ray; two brothers, Eugene and John; three sisters, Ethel, Nona and Myrtle and a large company of young friends among whom he was always popular. The funnel service was conducted by Rev Handel Collier from the Methodist church Thesday (sic) afternoon and an unusually large crowd of friends and sympathisers (sic) were present. His young friends carried him to his last resting place. The beautiful floral offering showed the esteem in which he was held. Interment was made in the Chester cemetery (sic).
