She passed away on Jan. 27, 1998, at the Homestead Care Center in Lincoln, at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 20 days. She was one of five children in the family. Having received normal training, she then taught... Read More	BORNSCHLEGL, MAXINE MAE—Maxine Mae Bornschlegl was born to Edgar J. and Essie Crowley Schelkopf on May 7, 1922, on a farm near Shickley. She passed away on Jan. 27, 1998, at the Homestead Care Center in Lincoln, at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 20 days. She was one of five children in the family. Maxine attended rural School District No. 93, which was located just south of where Cornhusker Farms now stand. She then attended and graduated from the Geneva Public Schools with the class of 1939. Having received normal training, she then taught school in a one room rural school near Geneva. She would later attend the University of Nebraska where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree and her Masters. She was married to Leonard “Jake” Bornschlegl on Nov. 5, 1942, at Beloit, Kan., and to them four children were born. Maxine continued to teach school in the communities of Ohiowa, Milligan, Tobias, Geneva, York, Seward and Nebraska City. She served as elementary principal in York, Seward and Nebraska City school systems. In Nebraska City she was principal of the 14th Street Elementary School, which later became the Hayward Elementary School. She was instrumental in the construction phase of Hayward Elementary School and in getting the new school open and running. Throughout her 42 years in the educational field, she always had her student’s best interests at heart. She had a unique ability to make school entertaining and fun. Her expressive and effervescent personality endeared her to her students and she had a special affinity for making even the most difficult of students interested in their education endeavors. She firmly believed that the formative years in primary education were the building blocks for true educational success. Her many memberships included Past Director of the Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Council of School Administrators, National Association of Elementary Principals Council of Curriculum Committee, the Nebraska State Department of Education for Policies and Accreditation, NSEA Helpmobile, Ak-Sar-Ben Scholar for excellence in teaching, and the Nebraska State Evaluation Teams. She also was proud to have been named a former Jaycee boss of the Year at Nebraska City. Her hobbies included traveling and bridge and throughout her life she always maintained a love for sports with baseball being a primary focus. Her children were a central part of her life as they participated in various school activities and later her interests were focused on her grandchildren’s achievements and activities. Maxine always provided positive encouragement for her children, grandchildren and students. She always believed that any goal set could be achieved through perseverance and hard work. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Essie Schelkopf; by her husband Jake, and by an infant sister, Fern. She is survived by sons, Larry and wife, Shirley, James and wife, Cathy; daughters, Linda McCabe and husband, James, and Mary Carmen Bowman; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; by her brother, Joe Schelkopf and wife, Joan; sisters, Alma Allen, and Ruth Hedden; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m., Jan. 31, 1998, from the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Graveside committal services were held from the Geneva Public Cemetery at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Wanda Bennett officiating. The Nebraska Signal Feb. 4, 1998
