Read More	SCHELKOPF, ESSIE MAE—Essie Mae Schelkopf was born April 3, 1891 at the home of her parents, Thomas and Sada Crowley, near Strang, Nebraska. She passed away January 18, 1975, at the Fillmore County hospital, Geneva. She was an only child. Her father passed away when she was three years old and she spent many of her childhood years with her beloved grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Davis, at their homestead south of Martland. Five years after her father’s death, her mother married John Heery and they moved to Geneva where she graduated from Geneva high school and was certified to teach school under the normal training instruction she had received. Mrs. Schelkopf was a successful school teacher for three years and then married Edgar J. Schelkopf on May 29, 1912. Five children were born to this union: Fern Geneva, deceased, at the age of 18 months, Mrs. G. E. (RUTH Marie) Hedden of Maryland, Mrs. Kenneth (Elma Katherine) Allen of Craig, Col., Mrs. Leonard (Maxine Mae) Bornschlegl of Seward and Joseph Edgar Schelkopf of Geneva. Mrs. Schelkopf was blessed with 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They were one of her greatest joys and her table was always crowded with their letters and pictures. They located their farm home just north of the Martin Schelkopf homestead near Shickley. During the years that allowed, Essie was very active in the United Brethren church in Martland, here she was a devoted member, teacher and Sunday school superintendent until 1937. Mr. and Mrs. Schelkopf moved to Geneva in 1937 where Mr. Schelkopf served as county surveyor for Fillmore, Thayer and York counties until 1958 when Mr. Schelkopf passed away. While living in Geneva she became an active member of the first Methodist church and taught the Helping Hands Sunday school class for 10 years. Her willingness to give of herself and her time to anyone in need can be recalled by all who knew her. This, along with her optimistic outlook on life and god, made her a most outstanding individual. Certainly, just having known this loving person as a mother, grandmother or friend, should strengthen the faith in all of us. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 20, 1975, at the Farmer & Son funeral home with Rev. John Stayton officiating. Mrs. Norval Lomax played “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Ivory Palaces”. Pallbearers were John Girmus, Francis Kimbrough, Donald Kimbrough, Robert Schelkopf, Stanley and Sterling Schelkopf. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 23 January 1975 page 5.
