Lead Daily Call, March 28, 1902 - "Mrs. George W. Kenney will be buried Saturday afternoon in Lead, where her remains are now. S.R. Smith will conduct the funeral and interment will be made in South Lead cemetery. Mrs. Kenney's two daughters from Sturgis have arrived to attend the funeral." Lead Daily Tribune (Lead, South Dakota), Wednesday, March 26, 1902, page 4: Suicide in Central In a fit of despondency Mrs. George Kinney of Central took her own life some time last evening or early this morning. The deed occurred at the Shannon house, in the room occupied by unfortunate. The reason for the act is not definitely known, but the general supposition is that domestic affairs wrought her mental condition to the point that she lost her reason and took poison to end her earthly sorrows. Laudanum, it is thought, was the drug used. Last evening she was heard to make threats to the effect that she would take her life, but not much weight was put in the remarks. Supper was not eaten by her last evening, and when she did not appear for breakfast, suspicion was aroused to the extent that her room was visited. No answer to the raps was made, and when the door was opened, Mrs. Kinney was lying on the bed face upward, the life having left her body. No one seemed to know who the woman was and inquiries did not reveal her identity. Finally Perry Hathaway was asked if he knew anything about the suicide. Investigation satisfied him that it was Mrs. Kinney, and he went to Mr. Kinney's cabin. The news was given to the husband of the dead woman, and Mr. Kinney in company with Ms. Hathaway went to the boarding house where they visited the room in which Mrs. Kinney took her life. The body was on the bed, face up. Near was a small vial in which was the remainder of the poison which was not required to end her life. The arm was lying extended from the body, and just beyond the tips of the fingers was a book that Mrs. Kinney had probably been reading. Funeral arrangements have not been made. There is only one brother living, so far as there is any knowledge. He resides in Columbia, Montana. A telegram was sent him this morning. Mrs. Kinney leaves a husband and two children. The latter are attending school at Sturgis. Mr. Kinney is working on the new cyanide plant in Central, and is so fine a man as is usually found. He is hard working, industrious and sober, and his friends express their sorrow at the misfortune that has befallen the family. He and his wife have not lived together for some time but the cause of the separation cannot be laid at the door of Mr. Kinney. Announcement of the funeral will be made later when S.R. Smith has completed arrangements. The 1900 U.S. Census finds May Kenny (sic), age 28, residing in Lead, Lawrence County, South Dakota, along with her husband W.G. Kenny (age 45, born Canada.) The document notes that Mr. Kenney was a carpenter in the Mill. It further states that May was born in California in October of 1871. Also included in the household were two daughters, Irene (age 9, born Oct. 1890 in Minnesota) and Hazel (age 8, born May 1892 in South Dakota.)
