William Patton, age 23, born in Augusta Co., the son of McClung Patton, married Mary J. Gibson, age 20, the daughter of John Gibson, on 29 Oct 1855. On the 1870 So. River, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer Jas T. Patton, 42; Agnes M Patton, 36; McCLUNG, 10; Tedford B., 8; Mary P., 6; Jas T. 5; Willie, 3 and Bessie A., 2, all VA born. On the 1880 So. River, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer James T Patton, 53; Agness M., 40; McCLUNG, 20; Mary E., 16; Bessie, 11; Archie, 9 and James T., 14, all VA born. On the 1900 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found commercial traveler McCLUNG Patton, 38, born Oct 1866; brother railroad depot agent, James T. 35, Dec 1864; sister Bessie A., 28, Sep 1871 and servant Polly Jones, 15, all VA born. On the 1910 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found postmaster McClung Patton, 48; brother hotel manager James T., 44; Retail Mercantile Proprietor Wm Patton, 43, with his sister Bessie A Patton, 41 and nephew mail clerk Jas P Alexander, 22, all VA born. On the 1920 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found siblings: unemployed McCLUNG Patton, 59; brother manager of Springs Co., James T., 55; brother clothing store merchant Wm Patton, 53 and his sister Bessie E. Patton, 51, all single and VA born. They reside on Lee Street. On the 1930 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found single clothing store manager Wm Patton, 63, born in VA, a renter, residing with his brother postmaster McCLUNG Patton, 68, born in WV. I suspect his brother William and sister Bessie who last appeared on the 1940 Lexington, VA census are also buried here without markers. His father, Hon. James Trice Patton 1826-1891, was born in Augusta Co., VA, became an attorney, a writer-editor for the Lexington Gazette, Richmond Whig and the Parkersburg Gazette, a VA Delegate in 1870-1871 and in 1880 a Rockbridge County court Judge. He married Nancy Agnes M. Barclay, on 28 Apr 1859 by Wm S. White. She was born in Rockbridge Co., VA, to Alexander Tedford Barclay * and Mary E. Paxton Barclay. They had 7 known children: McCLUNG, herein Telford Barclay, 01 Dec 1861 Mary E, abt 1862 (Mrs. Jno G. Alexander) James Trice, 4 Dec 1864 William, about 1866 to aft 1940 Bessie A, abt Sep 1869 (on the 1940 census, age 70) Archibald, Oct. 12, 1870 Buried in the same plot Lewis #345 with McClung Patton are: Agnes M Barclay Patton, Archibald A Patton, J. Trice Patton, Sr. & Jr, and Mrs. Mary McLeod Patton. 2015 photo of marker says: JAMES T. PATTON BORN JULY 20. 1826 DIED MAY 13 1891 HIS WIFE AGNES M. BARCLAY BORN FEB. 19, 1834 DIED JAN. 11, 1897 ARCHIBALD A. PATTON BORN OCT. 12, 1870 DIED JULY 31, 1891 Footstone says "M.M.P." and something illegible, at the base J. T., Jr. and Mary M Patton's engraving is on the other side of the monument. McClung's marker has yet to be found but was inventoried as M.C. Patton with correct years for him.
