He was the son of Francis L. and Roxa Smith. He was united in marriage to Bernice Kapple on December 5, 1923 and to this union 8 children were born. He is survived by his loving wife, his 8 children, Robert of Nodaway, Dale of Golden, Colo., Eugene of Villisca, Dorothy, wife of Lester Bozwell, Elliott, Cleo of Omaha, Donald of Boulder, Colo., Beverly and Marvin of Villisca; his sister, Mrs. Carl McCreedy of Randolph, 4 daughters-in-law, 1 son-in-law, 19 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was baptized into the Methodist Church and attended as long as his health permitted. He spent his entire life in and around Adams County. He spent most of his life as a farm hand and a farmer until he purchased a business at Tenville. He was always very active and very willing to help his neighbors and friends. He was a devoted husband and kind father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, although we part with him with sorrowful hearts, we know it is part of God's divine plans. Services were held Friday, March 18, 1960 at 2 p.m. from the Sutphen Funeral Home in Villisca with Rev. Paul Ellis officiating. Pall bearers were Paul Penfold, Alvin Pelzer, Earl means, Glen Finley, Charles Crouse, and Raymond Crouse. Flower bearers were Luella Penfold, Ethel Calkins, and Romona Govig. Music was by Carolyn Harris and Frances Wheeler. Interment was in Nodaway Cemetery. A memorial fund has been set up in memory of Mr. Smith. those wishing to contribute may send their contribution to Mrs. Smith, Villisca or the Methodist Church in Cumberland.
