The article that I have posted on the Pettit Family Reunion at the Mel Pettit farm was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the descendants of William & Hallie Vey Pettit. The article states the reunion, "is a "week-long affair because so many have come so far." Although the reunion was originally planned for only one week, it actually ended up lasting for two weeks, and the brothers that had traveled to Iowa stayed the entire time so they could see the different families that came and went. The article also states that one child was deceased at that time. William and Vey lost five children in infancy. Their son Paul was killed in a hunting accident when he was sixteen. By the time of the reunion, their sons Leland and Royce had also passed away; however, some of their descendants were able to attend. "Mel" Pettit, 86, of Ottumwa died January 27, 2007, at Springville, Iowa. The son of William B. and Hallie Vey Downing Pettit, Mel was born near Troy, Iowa, in Van Buren County, July 4, 1920. He married Ruth Maxine Lynch April 19, 1941, at Lancaster, MO. She preceded him in death October 20, 1951. A resident of the Ottumwa area most of his life, he served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He 1943, Mel began his 30-year career with John Morrell & Co. in the Mechanical Department until they closed in 1973. He was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, Olive Branch 21 A.F. & A.M. in Agency, Iowa, and also a member of the Wapello White Shrine #4 in Ottumwa, Iowa. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (Ed) Mairet of Sherrard, IL, and Connie (Jerry) Cronin of Des Moines, IA; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clare (Sandy) Pettit of Ottumwa; a sister, Twila Rupe of Aledo, IL; many nieces and nephews; a close companion, Jane Kibler of Springville, IA; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers and sisters; his wife; and a son, Leonard Bruce Pettit. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Hornback officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 7:30 to 9 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.
