Mez was born on July 11, 1916, in rural Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Charles and Martha (Ruth) Austin. He was raised in the Shell Rock area and graduated from the Shell Rock High School in 1933. Read More	Melbourne "Mez" Austin, age 96, of Waverly, died Friday, September 7, 2012, at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock, Iowa. Mez was born on July 11, 1916, in rural Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Charles and Martha (Ruth) Austin. He was raised in the Shell Rock area and graduated from the Shell Rock High School in 1933. On October 10, 1938, Mez was united in marriage to Olive Beine at the United Methodist Church in Charles City. During his life Mez operated a filling station in Shell Rock, worked for Dorfman's Auto Supply in Waverly, for Alan Electric and Supply in sales for the entire state of Iowa, and as manager of Waverly Gravel and Ready Mix. Mez was a member of Lions Club, Sons of AMVETS, VFW, and the 10 o'clock Hy Vee Coffee Group. He enjoyed fishing, flying, baseball, playing cards, magic tricks, telling jokes, and playing the stock market. Mez was also a pet lover, where over the years he has had dogs, cats, goats, horses, and one guinea that escaped from the exotic bird fair. Mez's memory is honored by: his two sons, Charles (Linda) Austin of Waverly, Iowa, and Richard (Patricia) Austin of Traverse City, Michigan; a daughter, Mary Jane Austin of Waverly, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Aaron) Kjar, Steve (Marla) Austin, and Shannon (Rick) Payne; five great-grandchildren, Cole, Ethan, and Megan Kjar, and Clare and Ellen Austin; and a brother, Frank (Marion) Austin of Clarksville. Mez was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Olive on March 11, 2008; and a brother, Jay Austin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11th at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial will follow at the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 10th at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly where the family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to either Waverly Pet Rescue or Cedar Valley Hospice
