Ogg, a pioneer Geneva resident, passed away January 18, 1957, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Josie Drake, at Kansas City, Kas., aged 101 years and 1 day. Melinda Ellen Redfern, daughter of John and Polly Ann Redfern, was born January 17, 1856, near Scottville, Ill. She grew up in that vicinity. She was married to Brightberry Burt Ogg, February 10, 1876, in Scottville. In September, 1880, Mr. and Mrs. Ogg and two children moved by covered wagon to Fillmore county, Nebraska. They spent the next winter on the James Dorrance farm in Geneva township. They recalled later that it was a hard winter with big snowdrifts that lasted until April. The Oggs patronized the mill at Fairmont for flour and feed although travel was difficult. The next spring the Oggs purchased a farm in section 16, Geneva township, and that was their home until September, 1895, when they moved to Geneva to avail themselves of the school. Mr. Ogg served as Fillmore county sheriff and was the first county assessor. He also served 20 years as a member of the county fair board and a number of years as city councilman and mayor. Mr. and Mrs. Ogg were privileged to hold open house on both their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries. Mrs. Ogg was a member of the Christian church and in her younger years was active in the Rebekah lodge. She was always interested in community progress, but her first interests were her home and her children. Her sweet disposition endeared her to all. Because of failing health and blindness, she had made her home the past few years with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Drake at Kansas City, Kas., where she passed away with her daughters, Josie and Chloe at her bedside. A brief prayer service was held Saturday evening, the 19th at the Porter & Sons Chapel in Kansas City. Services were held in Geneva at the Hrubesky-Farmer funeral home, Tuesday afternoon, January 22, at 2 o'clock. Dr. F. E. Pfoutz, minister of the First Methodist church, gave the tribute, using by request the Twenty-Third Psalm. Mrs. Gerald Pickerell, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Judith, sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Crossing the Bar." The pallbearers were grandsons, Larry Drake, Charles Grob, Gene Krause, Gerald Krause, Kermit Ogg and Ray Ogg. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Josie Drake of Kansas City Kas., Mrs. Cecil Dunn of LaGrange, Wyo., Miss Chloe A. Ogg, formerly of San Francisco, but who has been at Kansas City assisting in her mother's care, and Mrs. Hazel Robinson of Hastings, two sons, James W. of Akron, col., and Claude Ogg of Norcross, Minn.; also 24 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ogg is the oldest person buried in the Geneva cemetery. A short pause was made as the funeral procession passed by the old home she loved so well. The Nebraska Signal 31 January 1957 page 9.
